Knew I had seen some this somewhere. From historian/journalist Peter Applebone’s book Dixie Rising : How the South Is Shaping American Values, Politics, and Culture. In reference to the since-demolished old terminal:
OMG well I guess I somehow got that from the outer reaches of the great beyond. But we have all agreed (I think) that we are moving into a new and better era for RDU. I for one am hopeful that the only greyhounds I see are the ones with four legs used for flight anxiety and not those with wheels . LOL
But Terminal 1 could get some love and need to be a busy low cost carrier terminal it need more than a dozen gates. Ive been to terminal 1 it not that busy but if you invest it to terminal 2 level amenities it can thrive just as good as T2.
RDU is fine. Everyone stop being silly.
Also - who eats at an airport unless its a layover?
Also - JFK is the best airport. Love the chaos.
Gosh, I do a lot. Coffee and breakfast before an early flight because by the time I get through security I’m finally awake. Any meal I can put on the company card for business travel. Or just because I like Popeye’s and it’s there, or I’m at the airport early and want a beer to celebrate being on vacation.
Actually according to World’s Best Awards (whoever the …&%K they are) Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport is the best airport with an on time performance of 84 percent last year and 35 million passengers passing through.
Impressive given how many planes need to be de-iced as part of regular ops in the colder months. It is 70%+ Delta flights, so that’s a big reason why.
I’m flying home from Vegas with a layover in MSP next month. I’ve always been in and out of there. If it’s a late flight, most shops restaurants are closed.
From Twitter X today very impressive and many more international flights to Europe than the larger BNA Nashville airport. I will be taking your nonstop flight to Iceland next year myself.
Because international business travel is lucrative. People visiting Nashville will likely arrive into NYC or any of the more popular international airports in the US.
Looking at that map has me wondering. What are the biggest gaps in domestic destinations served nonstop from RDU?
Portland OR for sure. What else?
Honolulu is somewhere close to next in line terms of metro population size. Now that would be a good one.
Somewhere in Oklahoma could be next. Not exactly sexy, but OKC and Tulsa are both pretty big.
Milwaukee is up there too, but in contrast to cities in Oklahoma, it’s easily reached by a major airport (O’Hare). Maybe if we’re talking Wisconsin, then Madison would be a better feather in the cap, not sure though. Only time I’ve ever gone to Madison, I flew through O’Hare and the drive wasn’t too awful.
Closer to home, I feel like there probably is enough demand for flights to Asheville, especially if they could schedule it to allow meaningful one-day round trips. But would people pay enough for it to run in the black? Not sure.
BHM, I need a direct from Birmingham to RDU.
as for domestic flights I dont think a Portland would work probably not enough traffic. I would think RDU would be better nonstop to San Jose Silicon Valley I think it had a flight there at one time.
Bham would be good for a Southwest flight. I do think a smaller jet flight to Asheville would be good but again maybe not enough demand. RDU really has great service especially since it is not a hub for any airline.
As for Honolulu CLT could not make that work despite being 2nd largest hub for American. Problem is there is very limited business travel there and everyone wanted to cash in their points to fly there so the flight from Charlotte was discontinued.
You should take a bus. I hear they’re nice.
I haven’t been keeping up with this, but personally I’m happy about Seattle, Salt Lake City, Denver, Albany, and Montreal. Places I plan on visiting in the next few years.
Asheville is right at the distance edge where it’s barely faster than driving. Sure flight time is quicker, but when you add in commuting to and from the airport, plus security and all the other airport things, your looking at ~3 hours door to door, vs a 3.5 hr drive.
Coincidentally, I am flying to Portland from RDU this week and have to connect through Denver.
Adding to the list, RDU also doesn’t have a direct flight to Memphis. Closer to home, I think that a Savannah flight would also be on my list.
Charleston before Asheville
How about we do both.
A Charleston hopper on Breeze would be a dream.
I am there a lot and constantly think this but with travel to and from airports I think you may only save 30 minutes to an hour, and then you don’t have a car.
