That’s hysterical that RDU, excuse me - RD Boo, posted that!
TBJ says that JetBlue will put an A321 on RDU-SJU. I hadn’t thought there were that many Puerto Ricans in the Triangle – or is it the pharma business?
Popular vacation spot, too
Yeah my friend took his family down there this week for vacation, and it’s definitely on our list to check out.
The historic areas are definitely overcrowded and commercialized, and the rest of the island is suprisingly strip mall heavy, but you don’t need a passport, the jungles and beaches are marvelous, and it’s a great introduction to Latin culture for a lot of Americans.
SJU is also a hub for those who want to visit other Caribbean islands but don’t want to deal with MIA.
The diaspora in NC grew a lot after Maria. The island is incredible but is truly the epitome of the American car/suburban culture experiment (there’s even a Levittown in the San Juan metro area). Only one of the myriad ways Puerto Ricans have been (are being) screwed over by the US.
I’ve been to Havana which was pretty cool, but PR seems a lot more accessible, as you say. I heard someone say it was garbage, but apparently not everything that crowd says is true?!
Isn’t that what South of the Border is for?
The information above about Nashville is incorrect. American began flying nonstops between Nashville and London in 1991. Actually, they got theirs before RDU got ours; initially, American served only Paris from RDU. American wound down the Nashville hub in the mid-1990s and discontinued Nashville-London in 1995. Southwest essentially took over Nashville when American left.
We’re both partially right and partially wrong! I learned something new, too.
You’re correct that Nashville had a London flight on AA in the 1990’s; I was not aware, but I did find the data from an industry nerd stats site: https://www.departedflights.com/index.html:
The flights from from London to and from both Nashville and Raleigh started at the same month in Sept 1994 while both airports were AA hubs. See the tables at the links I gave.
Nashville’s London nonstop service was gone within 18 months, having only begun at the tail end of the airport’s being a hub for American. The RDU flight to London has remained ever since (switching over to London Heathrow once they were able to get a “slot” there.)
London-Nashville flights returned to Nashville in 2018 but this time on British Airways, after a 25 year absence of London flights. For example, here is the 1999 flight schedule for Nashville, and a USA Today news article about how Nashville has been without a London nonstop flight since 1994. They’re off by one year!
Fascinating the Paris AA flight was added to RDU before London ever was. THAT I did not know
Thanks. Another tidbit: the AA flight to Paris used Orly airport, not CDG. The flight stopped sometime during the slow de-hubbing process of AA at RDU. I can’t remember if it happened before or after Midway took over the hub.
Bermudair just announced to RDU, Charleston, and Hartford.
Twice weekly starting in April.
Now westjet just announced to Calgary.
This is a big deal for lovers of Canadian national parks (and I’m being very serious here). It will be crazy busy in Summer
Do you have a link for this?
Oh wow that’s awesome. I’ve been eyeing a trip to Banff
