Red Hat Amphitheater announced plans for a Thursday night concert series entitled Amped Up Music. The series begins on May 27 + runs through early July. Tickets are expected to go on sale later this week
Is it bad that I don’t know who any of those artists are? HAHA
Haha you don’t know Kooly High? One of them was on an episode of Love it or List it!
ummm no… we don’t have cable here. #RabbitEars
Fantastic news, we really enjoy walking to concerts a Red Hat. I’ve always really enjoyed it as a venue, although it can get hot during summer daytime concerts.
Kooley High is on the list, they are Raleigh locals, it makes a good excuses to get out for a concert on a Thursday night.
Everyone is invited to S. Harrington Street for tailgating!
Call me a hater but I’ve never been into Kooley High. The only truly great MC in their group is Charlie Smarts. But there’s a reason they are “Raleigh big” and never made it much further than that. Meh.
I’ve never heard of any of them either (unless Dillon Fence is the construction fence while the Dillon was being built. I’ve seen that.) But honestly I hardly ever know the musical guests on SNL anymore either. Apparently 38 is too old to be with it.
I know most of these!
The Hot at Nights is a alternative jazz trio featuring my buddy Nick Baglio on drums, hands down the best drummer in the area. Nick is a great guy with a ton of huge connections in the music world.
Rebekah Todd is an acquaintance - great Americana rock female singer song writer from Wilmington.
Eric Gales: Stevie Ray Vaughan mixed with Eric Johnson. Phenomenal guitarist from Greensboro
Arson Daly: local alt rock phenom group that has been super successful at cultivating a local following.
Abby and the Echoes: Asheville based female blues rock vocalist. Think Janice Joplin meets Susan Tedeschi. Great stuff. Also an acquaintance.
My band, Maj Deeka, is playing Pour House May 22nd!!

Gotta pay 60 bucks to wear a mask in a hot music hall, no thanks.
You’re not wrong, but to be clear it’s about $18 per person after tax to split the table with friends.
I know we’ve talked about Red Hat amph. being a sub-par (temporary) amphitheater. I just saw that they are performing some upgrades to the stage, greenroom, bathrooms, etc. I know a fellow with a crane company that reinforced the trusses over the stage a few years ago because they were failing. So if renovating Red Hat is an option, here’s my idea…
Take out the back middle section of seats and concrete completely and convert it all to stormwater friendly, general admission lawn. Look at how packed the undersized lawn is compared to the sparsely utilized seats in the back middle section. Apply for a stormwater improvement grant for converting 8k square ft of impervious Into pervious surface. Cut down the heat island effect. And create a better concert experience for attendees.
On a positive note - The Used/Coheed and Cambria show last night was incredible. Would be a shame if DTR lost Red Hat Amp. Place is a gem.
I agree, especially as more time goes by the trees and shrubs around the property continue to mature.
I feel like the Dix amphitheater will be a great replacement given it’s views of Downtown and large open areas
BUT it’s not nearly as walkable from Downtown as Red Hat is- that’s the problem. I really do think a huge catalyst for Dix would be to have some sort of streetcar/monorail/chairlift gondola system in place that goes from a central Downtown location to the heart of the park. It would be an attraction in itself, PLUS a public transportation option, even if it just goes from downtown to the park and back.
I’ll fight to keep Red Hat around. It’s my favorite amenity of Downtown Raleigh. Dorothea Dix won’t cut it in my opinion, it will just become another Walnut Creek to me. Would be a huge loss.
I agree! I say keep RedHat and have one in the park. There are enough artist to support both.
I walked around the perimeter outside Red Hat for the first few Used songs last night lol. I couldn’t stay for the whole show or else I would’ve!
