Demo permit issued 11/21 for 625 New Bern. Fences are up. Hopefully construction starts soon.
Now if they can just keep moving down New Bern Eastbound all the way to Raleigh Blvd (maybe a bit beyond) that would be great. I can’t wait to see all that low-end stuff just before Raleigh Blvd taken down and replaced with 7-story mixed use projects. Can’t come soon enough!
Luckily the vacant KFC building at 1221 New Bern Ave. will become a Taco-Roos from Wilmington.
They describe themselves as a “breakfast diner and Mexican fast food” Nothing special, but a lot better than the vacant building from before.
I’ve seen the ‘Taco Roos’ in Carolina Beach (It wasn’t impressive)…I’d rather see the KFC bulldozed…along with the rest of the way down to Raleigh Blvd.
5-Story Hotel rezoning right on New Bern near Wake Med.
Interesting proposition. It’s going to be an island tucked into the mess that already exists there. I drive this in/out twice daily. And, there’s no pedestrian access at all.
But, The Wake Inn and the old Swaim’s also need a quick demolition.
Keep in mind a “5 story hotel” could easily just be a Hampton inn, suburban looking building. Given there is no parking deck I can almost guarantee this is what will be proposed…not some cool urban design without a parking lot sea surrounding it…
Oh there won’t be a parking deck but I at least hope they eliminate the setback and have the hotel front New Bern instead of the parking lot. There’s a BRT line coming here, they have to start making this urban one way or another.
And, there’s the obvious need for pedestrian access over Crabtree Creek on both sides.
Glad you brought that up. Really big issue
I always have to be mindful for pedestrians (even pushing kids in strollers) on the bridge when leaving WakeMed to head out to Zebulon (or home). Can be an issue at night with no lighting.
Yep, there is a grocery store across 440 from there and no sidewalk to get there. If you lived at the affordable housing over there you can’t even walk to the bus service on the other side of the road. Def something we need to deal with when bet comes through
Yup. The Beltline interchange never had pedestrians in their plan back in the 1960’s when it was first built.
And, the mid block pedestrians from CVS to Wake Inn scare me all the time.
Came across this for interested developers…

Seems like a slam dunk if you got the money?
Land $2.4M
Construction $5M
Total sale prices of the 37 units: $13M
The old Swain’s Charcoal Steakhouse, then the short-lived Club Envy/Black Tie Nightclub, at 3201 New Bern Avenue appears to suddenly have some activity going on. A construction fence has gone up, and it appears that there is a dumpster outside for demolition debris. Hmmmm.
It’s had a troubled history, to be sure…
We ride our bikes on the Greenway past this place all the time. Everyone in the neighborhood I talk to about it agrees that this would be a killer brewery location. Greenway Brewing! Roughly a mile from my house.
The whole thing needs to be torn down and an office tower built. It’s perfect for that. Parking below grade. They could lease to UNC school of medicine, WakeMed, Duke’s medical school, Campbell’s new med school…all of the above
I was running with a buddy the other day past here who said the exact same thing…all I see is the chemicals leaching across the greenway, so maybe someone could get some brownfield money to make it happen…
That area where Swain’s was located is a funny little historical cul-de-sac which has been left behind as Raleigh developed. Tarboro Road was at one time a primary entrance into the eastern side of the city back in the early-to-mid-19th Century.
Where the old restaurant sits, there was first a ferry across Crabtree Creek. And, then later Milburnie Bridge. Tarboro/Milburnie Road had to do some climbing to get up from the creek to access the unincorporated area once known as Boushell. Then, the road proceeded east towards Hepzibah Baptist Church and Wakefield. This, of course, well preceded the development of Knightdale, Wendell, and Zebulon coming along later during the early 20th Century.
The site was later bypassed when New Bern Avenue was created just to the south with it’s steel bridge crossing both the creek and the newly laid Norfolk Southern tracks coming in from Norfolk by way of Knightdale.
Of Boushell (Boushall), not much is recorded of this area. It was listed as Milepost 101 on the original Norfolk Southern Railway, but I’ve never found any mention of a train stop or platform. Needless to say, it was wiped off of the maps with the coming of the Beltline in the early 1960’s, largely replaced by the interchange with (then) US 64.
