Rezoning - Z-2019-16 - Hargett, Salisbury, Martin, Fayetteville block

They can do what they want with the interior of the block and along Salisbury Street, but keep the historic facades along Fayetteville St. And PLEASE don’t touch the three “historic high rises” at the NE/NW/SW corners of the block. Losing those three buildings and the historic facades would be inexcusable. IMO

Um, I would rather not see pretty much any of these buildings demo’d for anything. This is perhaps my favorite block in downtown proper: Kings/Neptunes/Garland, Capital Club, lucettegrace, DECO, the historic Briggs Hardware building/City of Raleigh Museum, Apex Outfitter/Art of Style/Raleigh RAW retail spaces… this entire block should be left intact. The ONLY building I wouldn’t mind seeing renovated or possibly redeveloped is the Kimbrell Furniture. This would be a DAMN shame, IMO.

Only places I’d like to see developed on this block are the Kimbrells parcel and the empty lot on Salisbury next to Lucettegrace.

was in DC a while back and saw new buildings, where first 20 feet or so back from front of row-houses was keep. Even had inside window treatments to make them look like still residents.

Was The Big Easy formerly an alley? It looks like an obvious infill, and it lines up with plaza on the other side of Fayetteville Street. It would be cool to open it back up for an easier connection to Nexis

There you go @Tenkai Maybe something glass and cantilevered out so we can see the cars and how far up we have to drive to find a parking space.

I wonder @Jake what is under that Kimbrell’s facade. I well recall every building on this block have an “updated” facade, save Briggs, at one point. I agree with @dtraleigh and @Francisco that this is hands down the most historic block left on Fayetteville.

I think everyone is overreacting. They’re not going to tear down a bunch of protected historic buildings. There’s also no way the city council would approve that. I’m just intrigued with what they might be proposing and am looking forward to finding out.

Nexis East/Phase II??

I’ll tread lightly with this information since it is very preliminary.
This is 9 different property owners requesting a zoning change collectively to 40 stories.
Some of this 200 block on Fayetteville St. is zoned for 5 stories, believe it or not.
The facade is planning on being preserved completely, picture One City Center Durham.
There’s a reason some of these owners want 40 stories. But getting 9 different owners to agree collectively on a development is why this is very preliminary. More to come, but exciting stuff either way!

I was mistaken. It is not in an overlay.

Watch it be something minor, like an antenna. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Okay @dtraleigh now you have done it…lol

You know how you have a “heart/like” button listed on each of these…
How about at lease expanding it to… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::crazy_face::stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes::thinking::zipper_mouth_face::sob:
That way we don’t have to come up with 25 characters…lol

So we should destroy it?

@GucciLittlePig its the internet man!! with out overreaction and hysterics I’ve got nothing! nothing I tell you!!
So that’s my attempt at the sarcasm font just in case its missed.
Its worrisome, but indeed lets see what they are proposing. I am off work today and spending way to much time reacting to things rather than say . . . mowing my yard or cleaning the pool.

No, just explaining why someone might choose to build here instead of an empty lot in a different location

Seen it mentioned here a few times, so just wanted to clarify. Durham City Center did not reuse original facades. Everything was newly built.

I know, just using it as reference to help people envision this look:

@RobertSanderlin You are a genius! This plugin adds Slack-style reactions to posts.

I will install it this weekend. Then, we can react to posts with more than just hearts.

OMG, they took the fake historic storefront look from Southpoint Mall and slapped in on a new project downtown! I’m not a fan of that.
