There’s always a few people apparently who come and read from the Bible and want Raleigh to ban abortion. Completely ignoring separation of Church and State, and the federal government’s supremacy.
But they remember their right to free speech just fine.
This new council is making me happy already. Just read an article on N&O about the meetings today. Loving everything coming out of this. It’s like an actual shake up.
Members of the public reading religious text at a council meeting isn’t a violation of separation of church and state in any way.
I think they understand that a local ban on abortion would be symbolic and unenforceable right now, but in a hypothetical world where the conservative supreme court overturns Roe vs. Wade, the ban would then grow teeth.
At any rate, I think there is zero chance of Raleigh’s council deciding to do this, so no need to worry.
On a related note, while I don’t think that a prayer belongs at the beginning of a civic meeting, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if this council invited different faiths to offer a prayer. Then watch some peoples’ heads explode.
18 people were signed up to speak during the first part of the meeting - Requests and Petitions of Citizens. 9 of those people were there to demand that Raleigh become a “sanctuary city for the unborn”.
I respect others right to free speech and to hold opposing views from my own, but I don’t intend to sit through any of these speakers at future meetings.
Several of them don’t reside in Raleigh - they were from Cary & Wake Forest. They’ve been coming to Raleigh city council meetings since April and are outraged that the city hasn’t taken action on this issue.
They try to hold up giant posters with graphic images throughout the meeting but are usually told to take them down so as not to block others’ view. Several of them speak with lots of histrionics and fire & brimstone. They read prepared scripts that I’m sure circulate among these groups on the web.
So if anyone plans to attend future meetings be prepared for this - especially if you plan to bring children.
