Campo Taco will be going into the large retail space at the north end of Rockway (next to future Bechwarmers) per the window wraps that appeared in the last few days.
I find it interesting that large spaces here are filling in quickly compared to the two big spots at Platform that are still languishing. I guess the vehicle traffic here beats the foot + vehicle traffic on Cabarrus.
this one resonates with me…my anecdotal raleigh grocery experiecnes. wexford dr to colonial foods, 67. clarendon crescent to winn dixie on new bern, pleasnt walk or bike not too bad. huntleigh dr to winn dixie at brentwood SC on capital…easy peasy. Wingate Dr to food lion on fall of neuse…not bad. volant drive to haris teeter at northridge…i never used the car to get groceries. with these quiant old examples, with all the new stacked density in the DT area…a grocer could serve many…nearby, without ignite, reverse, drive, park..repeat. the affluence level or buyer type in this or nearby buildings may spur vehicular drives to more boutique grocers. ive been gone awhile.
The Taco Place and Benchwarmers seemed to have switched spaces. Don’t know why. Maybe the Taco Place was more ready to go or more ready to spend the money to be on the corner?
Well all I know is that at one time the Benchwarmer sign was in the corner window. Then all of a sudden there was a switch. Can’t say if that was a planned thing or not??
Does anyone know more about the plans for S Saunders and S Dawson? The Comprehensive plan indicates that S Saunders would realign into 1 single right of way with new development area between the two, but its light on details. I noticed that the ROW on Saunders Southeast of the next phase of the Hammell Drive towers was dedicated, which would indicate that it’s got some legs.
Walked over from the Weld here and this area will rapidly change I do believe. (However right now this area not so pedestrian friendly but I am sure it will be changing) These are nice looking apartments.
Tonight’s bike ride took us to Dorothea Dix. We went over to the Row and found that they are going to be getting a Benchwarmers Bagels and Coffee and Campo Taco Co. Looking forward to both as this is right off the greenway and will be a good place not only for greenway travelers, but also for Dorothea Dix visitors.
I’ll go a step further - I hate the Platform buildings lol - bulky, ugly, and just such large footprints for what they are - expensive (rent) cheap (built) apartments and bare-minimum retail.
So would’ve rather seen what the original plan was when it was envisioned as a 20-story tower with a smaller apt building attached.
Counterpoint: Platforms 1+2 will deliver 692 units. That’s more than any single project in or near downtown. Peace was 417 units. Maeve is not even 300. The Weld towers are 675, together. We all want height but if the baseline goal is to boost density downtown (or in downtown-adjacent neighborhoods), Platform is succeeding – more than some taller/nice looking buildings. On retail: Platform has two massive street-facing restaurant/bar spaces that will fill as the area densifies. Apparently they’ve had offers but are waiting for the right fit…
Well….i guess you don’t have to be pretty to provide the density. lol. I’ve also toured these units and they are bare bones with respect to finishes. Kane had to cut corners to make this project viable. All that said - I’d rather have the Platform than uglier vacant warehouse buildings. It’s a shame we didn’t get a nicer project but that’s what happens when the neighbors sacrifice height over everything else.
