You’d be the expert on Orlando for sure, and nothing you are telling me is a surprise. I’d only add that Orlando has to plan for millions upon millions of annual tourists in cars that clog its roads and freeways.

I think I just appreciate Raleigh’s standing with sprawl after seeing what it’s like to live somewhere else in the US where sprawl is not only tolerated but encouraged. We have a long way to go, but it’s a lot more dire in other areas of the country. Also I do want to add that places like NYC also see millions of tourists, they just choose to accommodate them with transit systems and a place like Orlando (or Houston) could too if they really wanted.

Well the tourist traps in Orlando are all car oriented, so there is that!

We took our kids to Disney last summer and actually looked into taking the train to Orlando. At the time, there was no way to get from the train station to the resort without taking a crazy expensive Uber. We ended up just renting a minivan that sat in the parking lot at the resort with a daily fee. It was kinda crazy to pay to rent a vehicle AND pay for it to sit in a parking lot for 5 days, but it was less expensive than 5 train tickets plus Ubers to and from the park.

Found on Reddit. Worlds largest water park currently under construction in Qatar. That’s a pretty serious slide if it needs two tower cranes to build.

And when all that water pressure rips off your swimsuit, Qatar will be there to arrest you. LOL

I’m just curious if they’d let you bring some snacks. That seems like it’d be a long ride!

I wonder how many people had to die to build this. Just saying…

Would that be an official or unofficial death count?

Not gonna lie these pictures remind of that movie ‘Mortal Engines’ that came out a couple years ago where it’s basically cities on wheels.

I have been following this project along for a while now. Glad they are doing something, but wow, what a slow process. The concept was proposed back in 2018, and tens of millions of dollars for this were earmarked back in 2020, but here we are in 2023, and Cary is still trying to figure out what to actually build…looks like the soonest this would be built is in 2028.

The hospitality tax is only providing $35 million out of an estimated $200 million project. The $35 million was delayed several years due to Covid. Then Cary lost their original location for the facility which was at the old site of the Cary Town Center Mall when Epic Games bought the property in December 2020. Luckily the new site became available when South Hills was sold to its new owners. I assume Cary will have to fund this through a new bond which will have to approved by the voters of Cary. All things considered it seems to be moving forward with probably just a loss of 2 years or so that delayed it until 2028.

Yep I remember reading about this going to be a bond issue potentially and found a WRAL article from 2022 and they quote the town of Cary as saying as much.

Cary taxpayers will likely answer that question with a bond referendum, which is likely to be on the ballot in 2024 or 2025, according to the town.

The Novus in Durham is finally starting to make vertical progress. Still going to be a while until it makes an impact on the skyline.
