Show Off Things From Other Cities

There’s a number of things:

  1. Number of lanes is one issue but some major cities do have streets with 6 lanes (3 one way; 3 the other).
  2. Speed is another issue.
  3. Sidewalk size. For example the sidewalk on Six Forks Rd right next to North Hills East is narrow. I don’t have a problem crossing Six Forks Rd as a pedestrian other than drivers are terrible, but the sidewalk is also narrow once you get across. Biking wise it’s bad heading west on Dartmouth.

At Wegmans, the problem is that people are used to the quick flow through traffic. Industrial Dr isn’t bad biking wise. My only complaint there is that there’s no paved path to the greenway.

Need more center refuge islands. You cross one side then you at least have a protected area in the middle.

Mid block crossings are also better. Instead of watching for turning traffic, the signal is only for peds

Raleigh needs a big pier & beach!

Just wait 100 years.

Midtown East is easy in and out just go in the back way off Industrial via Six Forks.

High speed rail to wilmington would sort that out.

Sorry Durham is nothing like Richmond. It’s got its faults but a lot of charm. Also 10 degrees colder.

Raleigh needs a river somehow lol

So thankful downtown Raleigh is so walkable and not imprisoned by highways like Richmond. Downtown Richmond isn’t that great but the Fan, Shockeo Bottom, and Carytown areas are great. The art museum is huge and well-worth at stop. Civil War Museum not so much.

I really like Richmond as a weekend trip. We’ve seen a couple of shows there, love the breweries and the hiking by the river. We may be visiting family when they go camping in Shenandoah Valley in June, and we are planning to do Charlottesville and Richmond as well. Your pic and also the ones of Lynchburg (might need to check that out too) are making me ache for nice weather and road trips.

I think that’s a balanced way to look at Richmond. On its plus side, it has both the river and a larger legacy urban fabric. On its downside, I95 and all of those cloverleaf interchanges downtown really destroy what they have going for them. IMO, this is the absolute worst offense of all of them.

Yes just walked past it. Highways really kill the walking experience of this city. So many charming spots but all separated by highways, highway exits, frontage roads. Hopefully they can do something about like Durham wanting to remove their downtown highway. Raleigh should urbanize MLK Blvd.

Lol this last image reminds me of Raleigh beige-side with the Wake Co Courthouse/Prison/hotels.

Getting rid of the Durham Freeway is one thing, but getting rid of I-95 is nearly impossible at best.

Lots of cranes in Nashville. Didn’t get a ton of great pictures unfortunately. Love visiting, but can’t imagine living here with all the tourists.

For all the cranes and stories about Nashville growing, the 2021 Census estimates that Davidson County lost 12K people since the 2020 Census while their suburban counties exploded with growth.
It makes me wonder just how much if this construction serves the tourism and second/investor home sectors.

I lived in Richmond about 20 years ago. We would go tubing sown the James river, right through downtown. Also trails along the River were great to get a quick Mt. Bike ride in. Great times.

I’ve lived in big tourist hubs my whole life before I moved to Raleigh. Believe me, the locals aren’t drinking where they are.

By the looks of their latest census estimate, the locals aren’t drinking in the same county!
