There would literally need to be a sliver of space on a corner somewhere, and I’m not sure that’s possible in Smoky Hollow. La Sandwicherie is literally at the end of a building where it meets a midblock alley. The modern Walgreens next to it has blurred the lines of what is meant by alley so it sort of blends right in with the wide plaza that’s created on the south side of the drug store.
I’d rather see that concept built into the Creamery Woonerf as (if we’re following the same concept as Miami) would be open as late as the bars. I don’t expect Smoky Hollow businesses to stay open until 2a and most of the traffic for late night would be off Glenwood.
Seems like “a” Raleigh at best…
In all the hullaballoo about historic preservation re: Berkeley Cafe, I thought this is really cool:
They’re restoring an entire lavish French-style roof in NYC so they can build a skyscraper next door:
Exactly, it can be done. NYC has so many old buildings, and MANY of them are ugly as hell - yet they remain and create a sense of walking through time in some parts of the city.
All the yimby’s say, ‘Put a turret on it’…HaHa
Wake Forest is turning an old car dealership into a new food hall in their downtown area. If that hypothetical ‘waterfront district’ ever happens near Wegmen’s, could be a potential use for one of those car dealerships.
Food Halls are the new malls.
raleigh used to have a few Miami subs around open late.
Well that’s cool! I keep meaning to go back up there. The drive is hell but it it’s become quite a nice day trip
Yeah they’re definitely the cool, hip, ‘en vogue’ way of saying a food court honestly. However I think a food hall wouldn’t be the worst idea here. Depending on how close they get to the creek, having large outdoor patio seating kind of like Morgan Street Food Hall (and what Longleaf is proposing at their place) overlooking the creek could be promising. I pulled this pic from the Midtown/St. Albans report on the ‘waterfront district’ for reference.
My folks live in Wake Forest (where moved to as a teen). Lemme know when you wanna go, I got room in the trunk!
Back when I used to bartend at Pantana Bob’s, Miami Subs was a lifesaver. A meatball sub at 3:00am after a long night slinging $1 drinks at PB’s really hit the spot.
Oh man PB’s…those were some times for sure. Saw all kinds of wild and crazy stuff on those thursday nights. Taking me back to my NC State college days for sure
I consider myself most pro-development, and in lieu of the Nash Hotel thread and to sound completely hypocritical, I do miss PB’s a little. Many 21st birthdays and Hillsborough Hikes terminated there. I’m sure you might have a perspective bartending/babysitting a bunch of drunk college kids though
Perhaps, but I have yet to go to a food hall with a Taco Bell and a Sbarro. Most food halls have local concepts and provide an easy way for up and coming restaurateurs to pursue their dreams without renting or purchasing a large space. I say keep 'em coming.
I meant that they are the new hang out, not the new food court at the mall.
Boston is finishing up a really amazing centerpiece playground, both responding to the influx of families into city centers and livening up their enormous windswept 70s plazas around City Hall.
