Show Off Things From Other Cities

For any Triangle art fans, the Nasher’s new exhibition of early Roy Liechtenstein works is really fun. With the other galleries, it’s a lovely little afternoon out: Roy Lichtenstein: History in the Making, 1948 – 1960 - Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University

We’re the city of oaks. Why don’t we have splooting squirrels like NYC?

They sploot on my deck on really hot days sometimes. This is the only picture I could find that I still have of a splooter.

Wonder if the City of Raleigh could tempt these developers to look this way? Developers are looking to turn a parking deck into the tallest building in Durham.

Hell yes, bring it on - in Durham AND in Raleigh. More of this, please! I’d be in favor of tearing down and redeveloping every single standalone parking deck in the city.

This just reminds me of how lame Highwoods is for killing off the 121 Fayetteville project which would have done exactly something like this.

Fair, but I also wasn’t super excited about the even taller blank wall of parking deck that building would’ve included - also not a super exciting looking tower in general. Fine with Alexander Square deck holding on a little longer in favor of something a little better looking and with a better hidden deck, since it’s such a prominent spot.

Yeah why did Highwoods do that to us?

Because Highwoods is gonna Highwoods…They’d rather go build something in Nashville or Charlotte while they sit on something here. Not sure their exact reason why they decided to cancel the project one they bought the land but something along those lines.

I heard from a friend who was familiar with this project that a big issue was the existing parking deck. The current owners wanted to guarantee that it would remain open during construction, which would have added enormous cost to the project. Not sure if it was the sole reason, but it could have been the straw that broke the camels back.
