Show Off Things From Other Cities

Why is anyone even still taking that “proposal” seriously? lol

Reminds me of the new-ish Havoc Brewing space in Pittsboro (which I highly recommend a trip to): https://maps.app.goo.gl/eB4zQfbdii8ai6gNA?g_st=ac

Downtown Savannah. Everyone knows of their beautiful historical district and squares. Here is the new Eastern Wharf on the eastern side of downtown besides the Marriott. New apartments, new hotel, new for sale homes/condos. Relatively new JW Marriott Hotel at Plant Riverside. Old GA Power plant converted to hotel and new build wings around it and it all fits into River Street. Check out that gingerbread and candy Cargo ship in the lobby. And those are precious stones displayed year round there. (Plant Riverside photos in separate post)

We went there last year and really like that JW Marriot lobby. Wish we had something like that here.

We just need to get Savannah’s vast numbers of tourists and inventory of historic industrial buildings. Easy enough.

Photos from Cary.

Definitely have to throw props out to Cary and not only the park, but the overall Christmas decorations downtown. I don’t know if there’s a place in the triangle that can top downtown Cary for a nice evening date/holiday walk at this time of year.

You were able to take pictures of the tree without needing to worry about blocking cars (which was my complaint about North Hills). I think this area overall probably has the highest density of lights, and the park overall is fantastic regardless.

Since we were in the area, we went ahead and stopped by Fenton. I like that they have an ice skating rink, but outside the section in front of the theater, there’s not much to see.

I fully expect Raleigh’s next 20 story building should look something like this.

Saw an article on this building. Thought it was pretty spectacular. It’s the Pan Pacific Orchard Hotel in Singapore.

People from Boylan Heights would literally die of shock.

Nice shots of the waterfront expansion. Also, over in the City Market area (a few blocks away from the river), they recently opened a really nice Irish Pub called Wexford. Ever since Kevin Barry’s Pub on River Street closed in 2019, there hasn’t been a landmark Irish Pub in the City, until now with Wexford. And Savannah has the huge St. Patrick’s festivities every year. Wexford will be on fire in mid March.

Singapore incentivizes green walls by counting facade vegetation towards greenspace requirements. It reduces cooling needs and urban heat island.

The “Bosco Verticale” in Milan gets a lot more attention, but the amount of concrete needed to support those small trees vastly outweighs any environmental benefit from the trees. Vines, as any Southerner who’s had to battle kudzu or wisteria or English ivy or Virginia creeper knows, are the real winners at maximizing biomass.

8 dollar WTC tower view with a nice baseball stadium nestled in an urban zone…Baltimore and Camden area.

Pullen Park is decked out all around the lake. We beat Cary on sheer expanse and volume. It’s not even close.

God what an ugly city Baltimore is lmaooooo

Aren’t you from Buffalo? They’re so similar in look and vibe (and I like them both well enough).

Denver Christkindlmarket (German style Christmas market)

There’s no reason why we can’t have one of this calibre here. Why not convert the Moore Square Park into a Christmas market every December? Parks are generally used less during the colder weather and these markets are very nice to visit and can generate much needed foot traffic. I saw that downtown Raleigh had a ‘market’ but consisted of basic soft tents and those plastic tables. It’s not the same.

I would gladly donate start up such an effort in the future.

Seems like the type of thing that Shop Local Raleigh would be behind. Would love to see something like this at Moore Square. The one in Denver is great.

Yeah, we can even block off Martin Street and spill over to City Market with more stalls and all. It’s really a low cost way to keep downtown active during the slower December month. Heck, even start earlier and tie it with the Christmas parade.
