South End of Charlotte is one of the strongest submarkets for office space in the state right now and attracting many tenants. Already popular with apartment developers and retailers (including multiple breweries) plus a light rail line running through it. The Rail Trail which happened by accident is a major attraction for walkers, joggers, cyclists etc. By accident you say? Originally it was proposed an emergency path along the light rail line and morphed into the major path it is today. Now retail fronts the Rail Trail instead of streets. Since Charlotte is close by many in Raleigh don’t make it down here much I thought I would take some photos today.
Includes new 42 story Queensbridge tower with upcoming 43 story second tower mix of office and residential. Charlotte Beer Garden opened by the folks from Raleigh Beer Garden.
Part 2 and further south down the Rail Trail South End of Charlotte. Including Sycamore Brewing on the bottom 2 floors of the that office tower called the Line and next door is a 24 story apartment tower called Linea. It was 80 and sunny in Charlotte today!
I see that they built the Charlotte Beer Garden to be just as ugly as the Original Raleigh Beer Garden.
interesting…i have one of the pinter bottom fermenting devices. they have a delicious offering from sycamore (if the same group) Sycamore Brewing
Great pics pretty jealous of all that stuff. Took my mother to South End last year (she hadn’t been to Charlotte since the 90s I think). She was impressed. Walked away with a very different impression of the city.
Yes it is probably the one and same Sycamore is one of the top 3 brewers in Charlotte. They had their tap room where the apartment tower is now but sold it but brew beer elsewhere in Charlotte. Their brew pub is on the bottom 2 floors of that office tower. They were very smart as they bought their land in Southend years ago when it was cheaper and made big money on their land when they sold to Portman out of Atlanta.
I pointed out that SouthEnd tower to my wife as we drove thru on 85 today. Nice expansion of their skyline. Thanks for educating us on the area @kjhburg
This is great place to visit if you want a day trip to Charlotte. The Sullenberger Aviation Museum which of course tells the story of US Airways flight 1549 that landed in the Hudson River aka the Miracle on the Hudson. It is a great museum right on a busy runway and they even have seats out there to watch planes. Plus a lot of other planes and they do a good job telling the stories of people from NC and how they made a difference in flight of all kinds. https://www.sullenbergeraviation.org/
Even though I have seen the short film on the Miracle on the Hudson it is inspiring to hear it again. And yes it is the plane as they dug it up from the bottom of the Hudson River and trucked in pieces down to Charlotte and reassembled it.
few more from the Sullenberger. Kids really love it and my friends from South Africa knew the story of the flight too. Check out the Sully right off Billy Graham Parkway.
Did they discuss anywhere in the museum the legitimate possibility that Evanescence’s “Bring Me to Life” may have helped motivate Capt. Sully to make the split second decisions that he did, saving everyone on board?
Adaptive reuse along the waterfront in Portland, Maine. All the old warehouses on the docks are mixed-use with restaurants and shops on the ground level and loft apartments above. Can’t afford anything here though. Bonus points for $20 burgers at a brewpub called Gritty’s.
Can think of a couple few reasons this might not work in Raleigh.
Some of you live here and we don’t see any photos of Key West. So here are a few I took today. Such a place full of character. Best part: the weather does not suck. Worst part: 970 flipping mile drive from Raleigh. Even though this was a fun adventure, I think flying is in my future. Enjoy…
See you tonight and we can take some more pictures!
(I’m not driving)
I’d love to see more micro retail spaces in Raleigh. It’s a lesson we should learn. (note the comment about the donut shop in a closet).
