Harrington & Peace did have a no right on red sign. For whatever reason it was removed
I literally talked about it in this thread ![]()
Continuing the discussion, it appears some intersections around Cameron Village now have No Turn on Red signs.
Knew this was in the works but had seen no timeline for it.
Very much needed. Intersecting streets with Oberlin in particular have limited sight distances. Vehicles are constantly creeping up and blocking crosswalks in order to see, sometimes for complete cycles.
I have a view of one of them and it is cringeworthy watching not only pedestrian conflicts but also cars pulling out in front of Oberlin traffic moving faster than the posted speed limit. Lots of angry horn blowing.
And as a pedestrian navigating the interior Village intersections they all could use a bit of mandated patience for drivers.
What I notice more than anything as a self proclaimed power walker is that drivers who are looking to turn right on red very often do not look to their right before turning. They all look to their lefts to see if they can turn right into traffic, but you can’t count on them to look to their right to see if anyone is crossing at the crosswalk from their right. This is why I look at the driver whenever I am crossing at an intersection. If I am crossing at an intersection from the far side of someone who might turn right on red, I crank my neck to the left to make sure that someone isn’t going to run me over when coming from behind me and turning right on green when I also have the crosswalk priority. You can NEVER count on someone even being aware of pedestrians because they might not even consider that you could be walking.
Sadly, I often feel safest when I jaywalk mid block when the coast is clear on both my left and right. Maybe we also need more mid block crosswalks that are button activated if we can’t rely on being safe crossing at an intersection?
Had an opportunity to walk the Oberlin and Clark perimeter streets today while working a Village District errand list. Returned via a zig-zag interior street route.
Only the westbound approaches of Cameron and Smallwood are currently signed “No Turn On Red”. No signs (at least yet) for Clark at Oberlin or any of the cross-streets (Daniels and Woodburn).
Sign placement deviated from the far right corner DTR convention. Cameron signage was on the overhead mast arm beside the traffic signals. Smallwood signage was on a new post placed on the near corner just before the crosswalk.
Cannot miss either one. However have already seen cars turning right on red anyway with horns sounded by the northbound Oberlin drivers who had to hit the brakes as they launched.
Some people apparently just cannot wait even for a few seconds.
