I will say they were very civil compared to those opposed to the Waverly Place rezoning in Cary, considering this rezoning was very significant.
Wouldnāt surprise me if how over the top some of them were about shadows caused their neighbors to want to support it.
I am very happy that it passed. However, from what I can tell, this developer (I met him once) has absolutely no track record of building anything close to this size and scope. I hope this isnāt just another upzone and flip.
That is always my concern, but the zoning increase is a positive regardless
Itās just another example of deference paid to single family homeowners, who are the only ones considered to be neighbors or live in neighborhoods.
I live Oakwood and have to walk the very unpleasant Peace St corridor for everything west. Iām sure everyone knows what Iām talking about. I was thinking how to handle that ugliness and came up with a skybridge over US 1 and the railroad and these towers could have been the start. I realize between the city or state property on the other side complicating that but has anyone talked about creating a better connection between east and west sides?
WRAL with the stellar reporting on āSmoky Holly Parkā
Preaching to the choir!!! Iāve been saying this for years - the new bright red pedestrian bridge going up over Wade x Blue Ridge would look amazing on a larger scale and connecting Seaboard Station to the new Smoky Hollow Park (though still holding out hope for Pigeon House Park, personally)
I recognize some of those people at the end of the videoā¦
I was pleased that Councilor Silver and Mayor Cowell fed off of the POSITIVE greenies and voted last night, without delays. It shows the strength in numbers, with a positive vibe can be a game changer. The plan going in was a 2 week delay, but the Mayor charged through, and the good guys won! Feels good this morning!
holy smokes Cox running for Mayor?
Thanks to all who took the time to physically represent support for this rezoning.
As someone that has represented many projects in front of various Councils it is tough when the room is filled solely with those that are motivated to turn out by opposition.
Hard to get reason to prevail and facts like the comprehensive plan goals and objectives to guide decisions when emotions are running high with no counter balance except staff and applicant.
Itās not head counting. But having others in the room in support can indeed sway not only votes but the decision to vote and not further delay. Thanks to all who took the time to participate.
David Cox been posting on Nextdoor saying its just the city being greedy for the tax base. what does he fail to understand? If we donāt get increased tax revenue from density, the taxes will need to be raised on all residents. Money does not just appear.
The city is greedy about being responsible with our tax dollars?? So his plan is to bankrupt the city??

Just ask our neighbors 50 miles the east how that is working out for the cityā¦
I think it was crucial to the vote that Green showed up and spoke about community, connection, transit, vibrancy, affordability. Red just droned on about building height rules in the Comp Plan - like they were reading passages out of a text book. They didnāt bring anything compelling to the argument.
Looks like this Forum was called out on Raleigh Magazineās post about this Rezoning. You canāt make everyone happy.
Can I add armchair planner tech bro to my resume or is that reserved for someone else?
Why are they so emotional about an apartment building.
