Absolutely. I remember what a game changer Dillon + Union Station opening was for the warehouse area. I drove down Harrington last night through SmoHo and imagined the future after it’s fully open. Wow - this is going to become a new “district” of downtown…maybe not officially, but in people’s conception of the different down town areas.
Agreed. Another issue with the article is that its premised on the idea that maximizing the number of units built is the only metric for success. And, sure, we need to build more affordable housing, and taking straight cash from developers may be a cost-effective way to do that.
But I very much worry that simply collecting fees as the primary method of increasing the affordable housing stock will just end up creating a deeply economically segregated city where the most desirable areas are exclusively for the very wealthy, and affordable housing is highly concentrated in the least desirable areas–which is hugely consequential since address dictates where kids go to school, among other things.
There’s a lot to be said for building a city full of economically diverse neighborhoods where people share physical space (and schools, and public transit, and political power) with neighbors from all walks of life.
I strongly doubt that the majority of the current board is deeply passionate about this principle, though, so I have absolutely no idea what the CMs’ rationale for the decision is. Maybe once you take a serious look at the analysis, it turns out to be a bad trade. Maybe they played themselves just to stick it to Kane, I don’t know. But it’s way more complicated than the INDY implies.
I’m actually kind of happy they took down all the tress near this for the 440 interchange redesigns. I drive down Wade Ave by 440 almost daily, and now I can clearly see the bridge on my route. I forgot how cool it looks. It’s also only mildly terrifying walking on it with hundreds of speeding cars below.
LOL it was more than mildly terrifying for my 6 year old daughter a couple weeks ago…
My dog won’t do it lol
Would be so nice if they designed bridges with pedestrians in mind and not cars only. Not A DTR specific point, but most bridges(if they even have sidewalks) have very narrow sidewalks perched on the edge of a significant drop off. I have had to use blinders( a notebook pulled from my backpack) to get across some bridges because it was pretty hairy otherwise.
I really wanted them to raise Peace St up just another foot or two and put a greenway under it. Daylight Pigeon House to West and bench the greenway along it such that you have a greenway or cycle track connecting Dix Park all the way to the Crabtree Crk greenway via Devereaux Meadows.
Thanks for filling in for me during my absence.
I got tired of waiting and had to take matters into my own hands
I’ll be home Saturday! I’m in Bend, OR. What a cool town. Why can’t we be this cool?
Good golly they’re going to have all 9 stories framed out by next month.
I’ve always wanted to go to Bend. Almost made it when I was checking out Portland as a place to live (before I decided on Raleigh).
Yo, this thing is gonna be way taller than Phase 1…
Bend is pretty cool. The idea that old motor lodges could be renovated it cool spaces came from my stay at Wall Street Suites in Bend. . I have high hopes for our old Inn between Dawson and McDowell. Not to mention the bike infrastructure is second only to perhaps Minneapolis.A main street with places to shop. And beer all over the place. Its like a smaller Fort Collins or Asheville.
Looks like in the webcam for Phase 1 that they are up to the 7th floor with steel structure on part of the office building in Phase 2?!?! And 1st floor columns coming out of the ground for the phase 2 residential building.
Darn they are moving fast of framework for buildings. Would be nice if could move as fast in interior.
We need @R-Dub and @OakCityDylan to post some more update pics from their perspecitve at West.
I’ll be home Saturday night. I’ll get busy Sunday.
