Looking forward to seeing this in person in a couple of weeks.

Hopefully one day these photos will be as historical as the shot with Doc & Marty in front of the clock tower.

The governors mansion is feeling a little blue.

Yeah there were protest in front of the state capitol building, the day of our meetup. By the way @dtraleigh great meetup hope to see ya next month.

I didn’t see a thread already for this, so I thought I would start one here. The state budget includes plans to demolish the Bath building and the Administration building. On the block of the Administration building (on Jones between Salisbury and McDowell) will be a new campus that will house several agencies consolidated into one place. The Bath building will be turned into green space that will compliment the adjacent park.

I’m not sure when demo will start but it should be in 2024. The new campus will house the UNC system office, Department of Public Instruction, Community College system office, and Department of Commerce.

The block will have 2 floors of underground parking, and on top will be a five floor building and an 8 floor building. There will be a 250 seat auditorium as well. I haven’t seen these specs mentioned anywhere else yet. No renderings are available yet.

It’s not sure what will happen to the current community college system office (across McDowell from the admin building) or the DPI building (southeast corner of Halifax mall). I’ve heard the DPI building would either get renovations or demolition once moves are complete.

Sounds like a nice upgrade. However I really wish they’d consider selling off some of those giant parking lots.

I’ve seen the renderings. Not my project, so not sure if I’m suppose to share. But yea its a whole block mid-rise office building. Not doing much to activate the sidewalks / street levels. Low height, so doesn’t add to the skyline.

Such a missed opportunity to double the height on half the footprint. Shoot, even do the below-ground parking for the whole block and then just go up on half of it to leave the other half open space or for a future tower. And could’ve faced the sidealks and added some retail spaces to help bridge the NC govt deadzone.

I guess on the plus side, it has a hodgepodge mix of all the hot design trends these days!

I am ok with the state property being more of a campus than a buisiness district. There are bigger, and more ctitical imho (N&O block), fish to fry than the state blocks. The old town owes it’s existance to the state, and with that comes an exceptance that the state will do as it pleases.
Happy Christmastide y’all!

While I agree with you on everything, at very least; 5 and 8 stories will probably end up taller than what’s currently on that block, and while the Bath building will become green space to accompany the park - there’s always the possibility of it being redeveloped into something in the future. I do wish more the of the state gov’t buildings would consolidate and sell off the land to private developers to spur more residential/mixed use here. Kind of frustrating they just insist on keeping this entire area a deadzone.

I just think the City Municipal tower on Nash Sq is a decent compromise for consolidating municipal offices onto a smaller footprint and having a public function for the groundfloor. Seems so basic but could’ve been a game changer. But yea, sterile office block is kinda the status quo for NC govt bulidings and honestly what I expected anyway.

Just about everything built in DTR is a compromise :pensive:

Story of Life = Trade Offs…

True but DTR is in a league of its own

The NCGA is calling the shots on this and in addition to being generally being a malign influence without regard for basic human values, they have also made it patently clear that they do not give 2 shits about the City of Raleigh. I would go as far to say that they actively work against the City’s interests in most respects, so I don’t really know why you would expect anything out of them here.

We all love DC’s pedestrian friendly downtown, but trying walking around L’Enfant Plaza. Bureaucratic government buildings usually suck.

So a few major changes coming this year. Looks like zero private mix-used however so that void of life will still exist.

For all his failings and idiocy, this is the one big thing I was staunchly Pro Gov. McCrory on; his “Project Phoenix” that never got off the ground before he was voted out. He - the Governor of the entire state - made it a personal passion project to sell off some of our older, and (his words) ugly state buildings to private developers to consolidate state offices into taller buildings and introduce more mixed-use development in the State gov’t district. He specifically- and publicly- stated he lamented the outdated nature of the State gov’t offices and the deadzone that the entire area was 90% of the time. I didn’t agree with him on much, but on this I was absolutely on his side.
