Building looks pretty bland, but I’ll take the density. One interesting change is that it appears they are proposing to make Bellwood one-way heading south, which honestly makes perfect sense given that Smallwood is one-way heading north just parallel to it. There are some small changes to the medians at either end of the street.
Sorry to double-post, but I didn’t see this posted anywhere yet. In response to the name change at the shopping center, Wake County voted March 1 to rename Cameron Village Regional Library to “Village Regional Library.”
I wish they’d find a way to turn that traffic triangle at Bellwood / Smallwood / Cameron / Sutton into a traffic circle as part of this redevelopment instead of whatever convoluted redesign they appear to have here.
I don’t know how those streets work now, but I use to come zipping down Cameron to get into the parking lot at Broughton always with just minutes to spare before class started - doing a true “California rolling stop” at the intersection. I roundabout would be fun, from a high schooler’s perspective. Heck, sometime I will still ride around them a couple times just for fun.
In the same way that humans are donuts, sure…
I think a true roundabout is a good idea, though, if you want to make it feel safer to walk around that particular intersection!
Looking at it more, I guess the only difference is that the right of way is not continuous for the ‘circular’ traffic and the edges could be curved more. I agree, that would seem better and probably more simple to navigate for cars, bikes, and peds.
I can’t tell from the small images - ground floor retail?
I’m not sure but it doesn’t mention any in the filing. It would be foolish if the Peace Street side didn’t at least have a few spots for a cafe or dentist’s office.
Not very relevant to the project at hand, but the plans were prepared with the help of McAdams, a planning/engineering firm. I just saw a headline this morning that NYC Parks Commissioner and former Raleigh Planning Director Mitchell Silver will be returning to Raleigh to lead the planning division at McAdams. He’s currently the president of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and was previously the president of the American Planning Association (APA).
Good to have him back in the Triangle!
Wish he was in the planning department maybe he could use his big city magic on us!!! But if they ever think about putting him there he would be in Raleigh so long, that he’ll keep this town quaint… SMH!!!
Lookie what we have here (photo taken Thursday evening) - while it bums me out immensely how many 100+ year old trees were just completely ravaged for this, it’s pretty wild to see what looks to be a crane about to go up on Grant Ave in a strictly SFH neighborhood
Looks like a bank is replacing the McDonalds?
Oh fun
Yea disappointing. I’ve always thought something like “The Hawk” residential building in Charlotte would be a good fit for this location.
Absolutely! This building anywhere in Raleigh would be a good fit haha
Drat.
You may have noticed “bankers’ row” on the south side of Clark. This (originally a row of garden apartments) an intentional choice by York to site banks, who like to be visible but don’t generate many visits themselves, out of the core Village.
Though the existence of the drive-through McD’s there is only because that corner was formerly the one drive-through bank within the Village – originally Security Bank.
Chase Bank location has been planned there I believe.
Who even goes to bank branches anymore? I haven’t, since my bank started mobile deposits some time ago.
Safe deposit box? That’s all I use it for basically. I went in once to get a bunch of odd change for my tooth fairy duties at home.
Another thought is for loans, I THINK people prefer to chat in person when talking about taking on new debt.
