Like most places around downtown, I’ve walked this area plenty of times. The truth is that there’s very little between NC State and The Village District with just 1150 feet between the corner of Clark and Oberlin and the Bell Tower, and I can make an argument that they are already essentially part of the same university neighborhood.
For living, these projects are desirable in that they sit squarely between NC State and The Village District (proper) shopping center. As a neighborhood walking sort of guy, I don’t see this location as a dead zone. If anything, and in my opinion, the BofA branch on the corner of Oberlin and Clark is the neighborhood problem, not the new housing.
Very true about that Bank of America (and the possibly abandoned brick building next to it?) being a problem. Hopefully both lots can be conglomerated and built up to 10-ish stories, would be a great corner building for the Village to extend some more retail/restaurant options
Fyi, that Enterprise condo building with that nice rendering (the second one Mike posted)? Well it’s way, way, way over budget. It was budgeted earlier this year and material costs have jumped astronomically since then.
Wasn’t sure where to put this. Goodnight’s new location in the Village District. Nothing much to see here, the inside is nothing to really look at yet. First pic is from inside looking at the entrance to the space. I’ll put up some good sneak peak pics as things come along.
I remember shopping here when it was Bargain Box but don’t recall a ramp or anything down into the space. Do you know if they’re making the place ADA accessible?
Yes! It’s hard to tell from the picture if you don’t know what you are looking at, but at the top of the stairs, on the left hand side, is a brand new elevator.
We should have a meetup at the first show they have in this space.
Funny this came up! I’m going to the Goodnights pop-up club tonight (currently sitting on this exact lot in the old K&W) to see Adam Conover from “Adam Ruins Everything” - and in preparation, just listened to his housing crisis episode of his podcast “Factually” last night! Highly recommend a listen; of course, there’s not much we haven’t driven into the damn ground on here, but it’s got some good insight!!! And of course some humor - but his podcast actually seems to be mostly informative/education discussion, much like his show, just with less “jokes” since it’s an actual back-and-forth discussion in real time.
I’m with you and had typed out something similar a few days ago. It’s so disappointing (but not at all surprising) to see no retail here. It seems like developers still think in terms of having retail destinations, rather than retail consistently dispersed throughout neighborhoods, e.g. “we can’t compete with the attractiveness of Village District proper, so why bother.” Even just a lil dry cleaners or coffee shop at the corner would be great here. If there’s no retail, I want to at least see a distinct ground-level treatment that makes this feel more active. Both of these buildings are just awkwardly plopped onto the ground.
Heh, small wood…
Please don’t forget to tip the wait staff. . .
I hear the disappointment about the lack of retail here. It certainly seems a place, of all places, to include some. However, for hotel guests the location will be great. (never mind - I was off thread, lol)
But can we talk about how awesome the screening is for the deck? This a big step up from what we’ve been getting and I like it.
I believe @elevatoroperator was replying back to my comment about lack of retail for the new condo building over on Enterprise Dr! But hell, wouldn’t mind more retail in this new hotel too haha. Definitely with you on the parking screening - almost looks regal!
Old brick office building renovation/reuse project moving along. Recently completed new front entrance/atrium and two side retail spaces in different stages of progress.
“The Stephenson” condominium building. Shares a little side street with the 601 Oberlin Apt building. The white office reuse building above^ is right behind (last picture):
According to WRAL, “Community Deli on Oberlin Road closed earlier this week…at least for now. They noted that owner and operator Crystal Bish is stepping away from the business. Any future plans/changes are unknown at this time.”
Went to a comedy show at Goodnights last night. Not sure if he was the owner or what, but I asked this guy when the basement location was opening up. His words were “It looks like we’re going to have a Christmas miracle and will be opening up in a few weeks.”
Yup that was essentially what I was told as well- I bought tix to the Anthony Jeselnik show in January, and asked the box office guy if they were anticipating his show being in the new location, and he said “That’s the plan, we’re hoping to have it open by the first of the year.”
I’m curious they haven’t announced any sort of headline/big name kind of act to ‘christen in’ the new place yet?
