A suburb with no city? Of course it’s Texas.

Similar situation to Fayetteville NC, or Norfolk/VA Beach. Military towns tend to have weaker downtowns and more sprawl for their size.

Norfolk and VA Beach have very distinctive downtowns though.

Even combined they are small for the region.

Norfolk is also much much MUCH older than the military bases around it. Killeen… Not so much.

I used to think Waco was the crappiest city in Texas (outside of the Permian Basin) until I…drove one county south and discovered Killeen.

Killeen is home to Ft Hood, the only US Army base with a higher body count than some actual wars.

Named in classic US Army tradition for a general…of the Confederacy. America remains the only country in the world that names military bases after enemy officers.

They changed the name.

It’s Fort Cavazos now (like Ft. Bragg is now Fort Liberty), which is an awesome choice on several levels for the home of the cavalry.

There are a lot of western cities with weaker downtowns for their size, but I think the reasons are typically NIMBYism–not wanting buildings blocking the view of mountains, fear of earthquakes, airports located close to downtown, or in the case of Vegas… the main commercial development concentrating outside the city proper as a tax dodge.

Not trolling but curious. Has crime ever come to your doorstep?

Not sure how that is relevant.

as a longview resident from years back, larrys was wonderful option to the sc (winn dixie at the time) on newbern or heading all the way to tower sc.

North Carolina Office of the Commissioner of Banks leaving the Reynolds Office on 316 W Edenton Street via early termination of the lease.

Once they leave there’s just a single law office that still occupies this building but I’m guessing they’ll start the process of relocating as well.

If you recall, this property is zoned for 35 stories.

Have we seen any sort of massing or plans for this? I don’t recall…

If I recall, that building is much newer than it looks. Kind of a shame to lose it, it’s really pretty.

The rest of the block outside of the Quorum Center is a giant waste of space begging for redevelopment.

Lots of rezonings, very few groundbreakings for sure.

The Urbanist Myth That Just Won’t Die (youtube.com)
Here’s a great video that talks about the need for density around transit despite the narratives that would suggest less density in a 5 story or less environment.
