IMO, the bigger thing is making sure that the really rather massive eastern lot line setbacks are used for an outdoor amenity, rather than just wasted space.

Raleigh doesn’t have tiny blocks, but I also wouldn’t say that they had giant ones either.

I love it compared to current conditions - the height in that location is going to be dope. But it will be eliminating a small sliver of pedestrian connectivity within downtown. I just recently read about a study showing a strong correlation between average block size and pedestrian fatalities. Block size was a better predictor of pedestrian fatalities than any other factor in the study.

Shorter blocks with 4 way stops at intersections keep cars moving more slowly. Slower speeds are correlated to fewer fatalities.

According to this video, the smaller rectangle block that houses MSFH is closer to the ideal size than Raleigh’s square blocks.

According to the Urban Form Std (linked below), blocks should have sides between 60-180M and a perimeter that’s less than 600M. Raleigh’s square blocks seem to meet that standard. Using the measuring tool on Google maps, and depending on where on the corners the block is presumed to begin, Raleigh’s blocks are about 133M (ish) square with a perimeter of 532M (ish). I measured the block that this tower will be on.

If the project had a cut through, would it continue to Dawson between The Dawson & The Hue? I’ve never walked that. Does a public path exist now between the two projects?

yes but the flip side for anitcarers, large blocks reduce the number of streets.

The downtown blocks, within the streets of North, South, West & East Streets, were laid out in 1792 - when the “Christmas Plan” was implemented for the planned Capital City. Nothing but horses and wagons then, so the traffic flowed, except for large mud puddles.

I’m with you ! All the see proposals and stuff approved at 40 stories and alot of these developers moving slow as molasses lol, to be fair its not easy planning this stuff, I know, but I hate to be a Debbie downers but banks and fiance companies get shaky around talk and signs of recession and I predict if alot of the projects don’t have some dirt moving by next Summer then its gonna be DELAY and CANCEL MANIA a repeat of 2008, some of the projects would be in the building phase if it was height by right downtown the rezoning process is a real slow down and time killer as well as money pit $$$$ for developers.
