865 W Morgan Street (former Goodnight's)

Maybe I should move to Charlotte? Same energy but at least they have a skyline for it.

Ehh. Other than the facade I find nothing special about the goodnight building . Rather have other lots developed first but I will take the density.

What makes a place interesting is diversity. This redevelopment bulldozes some of that diversity and puts something mundane and unimaginative in its place. The facade of the Goodnight structure has architectural interest, and it has quality building materials designed to more effectively stand the test of time, and even get better with age. The Goodnight building is an asset for our community because of those factors. It could be an asset for the developer if utilized it could’ve made their parcel distinctive and unique, yet the developer is short sighted and uninspired opting for homogeneity and the easier way out for the property redevelopment, which is a shame. This building also has built in value because of the community’s good times at Goodnights. I have great memories of going to this lovely old building for a laugh. People have been complaining that cities have no memory for quite awhile, I suppose I’m just one of those folks.

I’m disappointed, surprised even, that this is how it played out. But at this point it seems like it is a done deal, and I don’t have the appetite to picket for this building, or its facade, to be preserved - so time to move on.

I’m with ya here. This stuff normally doesn’t move me one way or another but I just like the Goodnights building and how it fits into the rest of the corridor. I’ll be sad to see it go but thankfully it looks like this building will interact with the street in a vibrant way.

I actually like this design. It looks like there is a lot of first floor retail space which will really help this area.

The majority of the ground level is actually residential and leasing/club amenity space. The site plan only shows two commercial tenants on the tail end, where the rendering says “sign.”

EDIT: another interesting thing I noticed is this is being built in two phases. The thick black line delineates them.

The fact that its old makes it special and it sucks that it can’t be saved. I’ve given up caring about the historic buildings in this town. Too much disappointment.

Next Tuesday’s City Council meeting will start off the process to close down the Morgan St. curb near Goodnight’s. If this public hearing date is approved, y’all may be able to get one last complaint aired out on July 6 about how saying goodnight to Goodnight is a loss for the city.

…or if you really wanted to take a page out of the NIMBY textbook, they did mention this:

So F**KING stupid they don’t include at least the facade of the original building in the redev. plans. I’m legit pissed about this one.

I’m really curious to see where Goodnights moves to.

Same. I think they’d be a great addition to Fayetteville Street. They could be one piece of the puzzle to revitalize that street.

it’s easy to imagine them in either Smoky Hollow or the Warehouse District. I wonder if there’s any space available at The Dillon that would accommodate them? Is anything happening with that space on the terrace level that was supposed to become a restaurant?

Not ideal for a comedy club - needs to be ground level so foot traffic walking by has the opportunity to “walk-in” to shows when there’s tix available; especially for open-mic night. A rooftop venue wouldn’t get any last minute walk-ins and would thus require a significant amount of promo to get people in the door for the non-huge special events. The fancy church next to Morgan St. Food Hall would make a great venue and get tons of foot traffic.

I overheard a rumor that Goodnights is looking to move to the Village District. I was at a Halloween party so it could be more trick than treat.

Subway Subway Subway I repeat Subway! For the younger folks here. Entertainment area located under the stores at east end of Camerom village in the 70’s.

Of all the things from the ghost of Raleigh past that people talk about and miss, this is the one I really want to come back. If I was 30 years older I’d have been there all the time.
