A couple of things to consider as a prospective hotel builder/owner.

  1. Raleigh had a real and consistent shortage of hotel rooms prior to COVID. Both business and tourism downtown frequently had to push visitors to hotels closer to the beltline or beyond. This also caused hotel prices downtown to be higher than they should for a market like Raleigh.

  2. We’ve added Longleaf (57 rooms), Origin (126 rooms) and soon to be Willard AC (125 rooms and 25 condos???). While that doesn’t make a significant impact on the shortage mentioned above, it seems to be enough to cause these developments to pause to see how things play out.

Now, back to the Willard having 25 condos?? I found this in several articles dating back to 2017. Did those get scrapped?

Yes they did. They needed a different elevator setup apparently and it got changed to all hotel rooms.

I believe the condos did get scrapped for the final plans, and now more reflects the AC hotel at North Hills.
With a rooftop bar/ meeting space which includes an outdoor terrace, see below:

It’s a real shame, given the @OakCityDylan discovery of that view corridor. Those condos would have some pretty sick views from just several floors up from the ground.

But now we could stay there and see the views, not just a few rich condo owners. #silverlining #glasshalffull

Well, the views will mostly be enjoyed by people who don’t live in the city, but you are technically correct. Personally, I’ve never “staycationed” in a hotel in my own city. If I’m going to pay the price of a hotel, I’d rather drive to at least the next city over.

We’re on week 3 of “staycationing” (not by choice). Stayed in a couple of cute airbnbs. The Longleaf is actually a great place for a quick stay as well. We stayed at the Origin a couple of months ago on our way through Raleigh and it was also a pleasant experience. That said, it is strange living in your own city but not in a “home”.

I live on Peace Street and stayed in the Hampton Inn on Glenwood South a few months back. It was actually pretty awesome. Felt kind of like a tourist.

Or nothing. I think nothing. Just some utility work that has been teasing me all year.

In case y’all like big cranes, they will be assembling a big crane on site to take down the existing crane starting at 7:00pm on Friday, January 8th and hopefully finishing by Sunday the 11th. Should be interesting. Glenwood Avenue will be closed for this event.
