I come out of Boylan Heights and walk west along the path next to Western until I get to the funky intersection at the entrance of Pullen Park. I then continue on along Western until I turn right and go under Pullen Rd and follow it to NC State. It’s actually a nice walk and that part through the woods by the university make you feel like you are well into the country, even though you are literally on top of the state’s largest university.
Most importantly, I often hit up Talley Market for some hand dipped Howling Cow ice cream.
My guess is the City is waiting until the Western BRT construction which will redo this intersection anyhow. Unfortunately their resources are spread pretty thin. Not that this is by any means acceptable, though.
And now there’s that beaver dam and pond along that section of the route! It’s probably been there for six months now, that’s how long it’s been since I actually went in to the office…
Let me know who you contact, and I will do the same.
I was excited to finally get back to bike commuting, but not so much after seeing this.
Isn’t it crazy that there’s a beaver dam right there? That makes the stretch feel even “more in the country” than it already did.
I’ve always just biked along the sidewalk here. Yes, it’s pretty narrow, but I have a bell and I don’t mind stopping and getting off if I have to. It’s a pretty short stretch and I like being off the road.
Of all of the times that I’ve walked that stretch where the sidewalk is narrow, I’ve never encountered another person. I suppose that it can happen, but it just hasn’t happened yet to me.

We approved an e-bike incentive program in Raleigh! A pilot will launch first using Energy Efficiency & Conservation Block Grant funds, direct vouchers: $1,500 for income-qualified and $500 for all; staff will also develop permanent, longterm program. More details soon! #ralpol
Taken to Twitter again…

I spoke at the most recent Raleigh Transportation Authority meeting about this. Everyone seemed receptive, and staff said they would look into this (and hopefully something will come out of this…)
The staff said it was an issue of capacity in the station and how long the gotriangle buses need to sit before leaving.
Thanks! I really appreciate that you let them know, since speaking to GoRaleigh directly didn’t do anything. I spoke to GoTriangle a year ago, and they said they would look into it. This was right after an incident in Chicago where a kid was killed:
I would prefer that someone didn’t die to have these changes needed. This is a tight section of the road. The sidewalk on the right is too bumpy and thin to accommodate bike riders to divert. Additionally, there is a crosswalk up ahead that the busses block the right side of. If changes aren’t made, someone is going to get hurt. And, if changes aren’t made, it would be hard to argue that it isn’t complete negligence.
There’s usually one, at most 2, buses that usually sit there. Perhaps they could put the bus or buses here and find another place to put the GoRaleigh vehicles. Whatever they choose to do, parking buses in bike lanes is not the correct solution:
And block the car traffic???
Sorry, I’m just guessing their response. “We can’t pull the buses into this lane as that’s reserved for cars.”
I hope I’m wrong.
BTW, no response at all from CoR nor GoRaleigh on my Tweet which is somewhat surprising. CoR is usually pretty good with their Twitter activity.
Maybe the situation will improve when the RUS BUS station is built and some routes will switch to that one. Maybe.
That’s a few years away, if not a decade. There needs to be a temporary solution put in place to make this station safer for everyone
im not sure here but while a possible annoyance at that given moment most busses run 15 minutes in raleigh or less? this happens to a cyclist how often? and if not a handicapped boarder in a few seconds that bus is on its way again.
The bus in the photo is not running (in the photo, the LED signage on the bus reads “Not In Service”). That’s the biggest problem; they frequently just park buses there for long stretches of time. In terms of frequency, it seems like 50% of the time I bike by here, there’s a bus blocking the lane, but maybe I ride at weird times.
that is odd for a not in service bus to park there. i thought they were usually garage bound at that point.
As someone noted a couple of weeks ago this “stop” serves as the launch point for the Gotriangle ZWX commuter run to Zebulon and Wendell.
Runs three times before 9 AM and again between 4-6 PM. Bus parks there between those hours and for a while before scheduled runs.
Blocks bike lane and mid-block crosswalk views. Clearly a band-aid solution for a crowded facility instead of loading at one of the interior transit center platforms.
Bus turned off in the lane today. In my experience biking this lane from work every day, 80-90% of the time there’s a bus parked here, half the time the parked bus isn’t even on, it’s completely shut off. Supposedly this is mainly an issue with GoTriangle busses since they have to allow extra time for potential traffic without bus only lanes.
