Bike Lanes in and around DTR

Notice how the bus completely blocks the yield to pedestrians sign to the rest of the road.

Hereā€™s a way to compare bike systems around the country according to PeopleForBikes. Not to stoke the flame, but Charlotte does rank surprisingly higher. I think their RailTrail helps a lot with the scoring.

Will probably grab some photos tomorrow, but does anyone know if thereā€™s a way to report trees that need to be trimmed in bike lanes? The ones on N. West Drive are hanging decently low. Iā€™ve been having to duck underneath or ride in the street.

You can also send a Twitter message to the City Of Raleigh. They are very responsive and will get it to the right department.

See Click Fix app has always worked well for me for needed Public Works type fixes. Allows (and they encourage) attachment of photos.

Starts a work order process. They acknowledge receipt and system gives you a thread to ask whatā€™s up. Response sometimes moves at City time but seemingly always gets done.

There are also lots of sidewalks blocked by overgrown trees and bushes. Iā€™ll send those pics too!

See Click Fix has worked well for me too. BPAC will be looking at how we keep bike lanes clean and clear of this type of obstruction. The city is currently running a pilot project with bike lane sweepers (miniature street sweepers). Data will be used to assess resource needs and sweeping frequency.

One of my neighbors was able to get a small bench at the bus stop by using the Click Fix App. The City seems more reactive than proactive sometimes. But that ok, it encourages the citizens to get involved. They canā€™t see everything or be everywhere. I like it.

What is BPCA?

Also - They need to look at all the people parking in the bike lanes.

Man, I find it hard to believe that the city isnā€™t aware of the disturbing amount of bus stops that donā€™t have shelters, benches, or even safe access via sidewalk.

Well they may know but they seem to be Johnny on the Spot if you report it. Not only did this neighbor get this bench installed, they were also able to get it replaced when I Porta Potty truck (not kidding) ran over it. Lol. AND all within a matter of days. Both times using that app.

Ok, Iā€™m going to put in a work order to install shelters and benches at every bus stop. Weā€™ll see how Johnny on the spot they are.

Try not to overdo it all at once @Phil - keep us posted.

Yeah Johnathan did you ever submit my suggestion about traffic lights specifically for bikers some JaĆr corridors could benefit from that hereā€™s a refresher.

Sent. Unfortunately I donā€™t know if the photos do the report justice. Itā€™s between Tucker and Peace St.

On left: The trees across from the stop sign hang low. Might be too far to see from this photo.
On right: Coming down N. West St. towards Publix right in front of Smoky Hollow.

Bottom: S. West St in front of the Dillon. These are good and donā€™t require anything.

Thanks. I may do this as well.

Even if the photos do not capture the problem they do confirm the location of the trees of concern. I suspect they make the response decision in the field.
