Bike Lanes in and around DTR

Had some extra time so I decided to bike today. Ended up going down to Lake Johnson and then test the waters for Dorothea Dix bike acceptance for the July 4th event. All entrances were blocked to cars but didn’t know there was bike parking in the park. Some signing for bikes would have been nice. I did see bike parking listed on the website so I guess I could have checked there.

I also saw a lot of e scooters left just outside the park. I’m guessing that the zone wasn’t allowing for them to be parked in the park.

Glad to see that there was bike parking.

Oaks and Spokes had a nice service set up for bike parking yesterday at Dix for the July 4th celebration. It was a nice touch!

Sorry to be dense - did people ride their bikes home that late at night (which seems crazy), or are they just riding their bikes from their cars? If the latter, then they still had to park and sit in traffic afterwards. I’m not sure I get cycling to the fireworks.

I took my (e)-bike to Dix, set it down next to me in the grass for the fireworks, then (e)-biked home around 10ish - I have a headlight on the (e)-bike as well as a headlamp I wear while biking in the dark!

I’ve always felt safer biking at night with my headlight - it’s bright enough that my bike is more visible than during the day. The city put lights along the greenway as well, so we were able to bike along the greenway to downtown and then through downtown pretty safely. Did get stuck in some traffic though in Boylan Heights, since there aren’t bike lanes there and the sidewalks were pretty crowded.

Not really a dense question. There’s quite a few people who don’t necessarily live far from Dix and can get there biking decently easy. I’ve ridden around downtown late at night. At first it might seem a little scary/weird but after a bit, you get used to it. Getting in and out of the parking lots can be a frustrating experience. On top of that, it’s a walk to the parking lot from the park. It’s not necessary long but maybe a 8-10 minute walk.

Take the bike and it can be quick to get away from the park.

Which greenway segment has lights now? That’s great news.

Sadly it was just temporary lights for those walking/biking to Dix Park for the fireworks

Night ebike ride to North Hills and then out towards Lake Boone Trail. The total distance was 11.4 miles.

We used the greenway during the day, but neighborhood streets during the night. I like rides like this at night because there is very little traffic.

I do wish Lake Boone Trail had some type of bike lane. Although tonight was no problem, the speeds on Lake Boone Trail are too high (45MPH on some sections). I wish that the signal would pick up the bikes going across Glen Eden/Granville Dr. It’s a good connection from NH to Lake Boone Trail area.

Very enjoyable overall.

Separated bike lanes or bike track with bike traffic lights, 25 mph speed limit, and wider sidewalks with minimal raised crosswalks would be great for this trail corridor.

Safe to say that whatever effort has been expended to get GoRaleigh to listen is going to be and will continue to be ignored.

It completely flabbergasts me. Bikes, much like buses, are supposed to be alternative forms of transportation. Yet, I’m unable to feel safe down riding my bike down this corridor because GoRaleigh insists on using the bike lane as a parking spot.

Madenning! I doubt GoRaleigh reads this forum so I’ve used your pic and Tweeted to them.

I called them a year ago and they promised they’d look into it. A couple posters earlier mentioned GoRaleigh would look into it. Unfortunately, I don’t think they’ll do anything until they are either publicly shamed or someone “tragicly and unavoidably” gets hurt or gets killed because of this.

There were three buses there last night when I was driving by at 6:00! Plus a cyclist attempting to get through in heavy traffic. Usually at least one of the buses says “out of service.”

ridiculous :-1:

Bike lanes in this city are a joke. I see not just buses, but cars parked in a lot of them. People think they are parking spots all across the city. City needs to crack down big time on this.

I think our entire bike lane approach is wrong. Let’s stop with miles and miles of paint and change it to a few miles of high-quality bike infrastructure each year. Either do it right or not at all. I’ll :grumpy_cat: with you.

I’m tempted to dig in but don’t want to come off as a NIMBY ass.

Do cars get tickets for blocking a bike lane? If yes, does GoTriangle have some kind of waiver or permit?

The real crime is that unbelievably lazy parking job by the white Sierra.

Exactly, these share-arrows are almost meaningless. I’ve given up on traveling past Moore Square on Blunt St. in these lanes. If I need to travel south on bike or scooter I use Fayetteville St. or Salisbury St.
Trying to swerve out of the way of these parked busses while turning your head to see if traffic is behind you, all while also trying to play frogger with zombies walking into traffic. It’s just not worth it, and they have no motivation to fix it.
