Bike Lanes in and around DTR

I agree with you on this and would actually rather see them turn all the bike lanes down Anderson/St Marys into, you know, sidewalks for all those people in all those houses to use. Most times I just see people walking in… the bike lanes lmao

Here’s the discussion. It’s a nice overview to get caught up about the Bike Raleigh plan’s history and how things are implemented.

There’s a quote by the presenter where she says, along the lines of, “The 2016 bike plan did take into account feasibility or constructability of bike infra.” I feel things could have been left at that and moved one.

Anyway, a new updated plan should be in place some time next year.

If you want to jump straight to the enforcement part, that is below in two videos, first from staff, second from the police. Looks like over the next year, the city will be testing out new tech to separate the bike lane from vehicles. I’m bummed that they call these designs “innovation”.

Hey @Brian, any chance you could solicit an update on why the bike lanes on the south side of Hillsborough St. were never restriped (with additional sharrows) like on the north side?

Thanks!

I have been asking/pushing for these lanes to be repainted for 3+years. The latest is the city is trying to coordinate this with the contractor, Live it Up H’boro St., and NCSU. They’re hoping to be able to do the work at night so as not to be too disruptive.

When a new project is being done the markings are handled by the department leading the project. When a project is being maintained or markings are being repainted, then it’s handled by a different department - street maintenance or something - and that unit has a big queue.

The updated markings on H’boro will likely be confusing. They’re supposed to repaint the existing bike lanes in the door zone and also add sharrows to the vehicle travel lane. So where are bikes supposed to go? Well, it’s up to you the rider. If you’re not comfortable in the bike lane you can take the travel lane and vice versa.

This entire post is a head scratcher. But this part is utterly disturbing. Both cyclists and drivers will be confused. Who comes up with this nonsense?

Visiting the 2024 Parade of Homes on Ridge Road this weekend, I saw that most folks were parking in the bike lane on both sides with zero regard to cyclists. It was very disappointing to see that. While I failed to take a photo of these violations, I did get a snap of the RE agent cars parked on the freaking sidewalk for a house for sale on Woodburn near Wade Ave! That one infuriated me.

Wonder what the response would be if people started parking car lanes?

The city would have them towed in no time. The same should apply to bike lanes and sidewalks. This is ridiculous.

You should have walked over the car

the enforcement statement from the police explains why the cadillac on milburnie has been able to be parked in the bike lane for months. guess i have to report it for them to do anything

They’ve been triple parking in that area lately. Creating an incredibly long and unsafe area for both bicyclists and pedestrians.

While it’s, a 1-way street, it’s still incredibly dangerous to have to go out from behind a bus into the road from a crosswalk and they absolutely should not be doing that.

The double standard here is unreal.

I’ve been running into them blocking a lot on Salisbury at the Capital. I ended up having to ride on the left straight lane to get passed them.

To add on top of that, the bike lanes on West St have also been getting people parking on them. I’ve pretty much ended up having to ride opposite of traffic in the road since it’s a one way south of Hargett.

On some good news, it looks like the Oberlin Streetscape Project may be getting completed this week (Project link) ! I rode on Oberlin on my way home today. It looks like they have the southbound road pretty much resurfaced.

On a separate note, the bike lanes on St. Mary’s St. is a nice addition. I’ve used the lanes quite a bit snice they’ve been put in. The downside is that the trash bins have been up in the lanes. I do want to point out that there have been some elevated crosswalks across St. Mary’s. I would have liked to have seen them a bit higher as they don’t really operate as a speed bump much. I am really happy to see an attempt.

New bikes lanes on Oberlin. 90% done. There was one small section that looks like it still needs to be paved. I was really pleased with the markings just south of Roberts St. They had the bike lane end and kind of merge into the traffic. With the new configuration, it flows through.

I’d like to see a change to the configuration of the roundabouts. There’s no bike lanes through the roundabout which means either waiting in traffic or trying to move around in a non official lane. The one at Hillsborough/Pullen is the one I’m talking about. It seems a bike lane can be marked through without any modifications outside of paint.

I’ve been bringing up that roundabout for quite some time Twitter/x. It’s easily the most sucky part of biking in that area (besides maybe squeezing through in the door zones further up Hillsborough St., which is another issue).

There’s absolutely enough room to paint a real bike lane in there. Just need the will to do it.

I agree. I bike all along Hillsborough St quite often and it’s easily the worst part along with the door zones. I almost want to say that the parking along the NC state side of Hillsborough St should be replaced with a two way bike lane. No idea if it would actually work but it would be sweet. If they connect the section from Gorman/Faircloth to Shepard St, you could bike from downtown Raleigh to the NCMA which would be a pretty sweet feature.

For longest time, I wanted to go out and measure the space around the bike lane here on Blount. While I forgot my tape measure, these photos are good enough for me. I seems like the striping on Blount here is just done incorrectly. Or there was an obvious use case that was not considered, that being the buses parking here. Indeed when I asked the city about it, they confirmed that it’s a valid bus parking zone, has been for awhile, and that a typical bus does not fit in that space.

You can see the difference between a bus parked here and a small SUV, which just barely fits. To me, one department wasn’t talking to another department and it caused it to be overlooked.

Are you still in this role? What’s the best way to get signalling issues address for pedestrian and bike safety?

In particular, I was at the at the intersection of Wade and Ridge Rd with my bike. There is a pedestrian / bike crossing over wade from the shopping center to the House Creek greenway path on the other side. I mashed the pedestrian button at the signal and waited for the light to turn green.

The pedestrian light went green and I started to cross. Meanwhile, the light on Ridge road also turned green, sending a line of cars turning left turn right into the green pedestrian crossing. I had to wait in the median until all the traffic cleared, until the end of the light cycle, and then scurry across quickly, before east bound traffic on Wade resumed. Very unsafe.

The pedestrian green cycle does not provide a safe way to cross at this intersection.

I’m sorry you had a bad experience! I’m not, I would reach out to the staff listed on the BPAC page here.
