Bike Lanes in and around DTR

Bike lanes are back to being clearly marked downtown on West Street by the Dillon.

Photos from tonight at Crank Arm ride. Photos include photos of Downtown Raleigh from Dix and Park City. My last photos were mainly of the pedestrian improvements due to Clairmont at Crabtree complex. I know a lot of people were disappointed with this (myself included), but I absolutely love the connection here. I do wish there was a better connection on the mall side. This is similar to North Hill’s terrible connection at Six Forks Rd.

My apologies if the photos layout is weird.

  2. A lot of the cones have been moved out of the way on Oberlin. Not sure if it’s done by someone who was annoyed or the construction company.
  3. Greenway like path in front of Clairmont at Crabtree across from Crabtree Mall
  4. Looking towards Crabtree from the path in front of Clairmont at Crabtree

  6. Looking at the intersection of North Hills Drive. There’s a crosswalk on the south section of the intersection, but no button to cross here. Only the North side has a button.

I walked out this morning to get this photo showing that South Street is closed and I saw a wreck near the Lenoir and McDowell intersection involving a bicycle and car. I didn’t want to take a photo, I don’t know I feel icky about it, but the bike was underneath the front of the car. When I arrived, the person was in the ambulance and shortly after, it drove away, lights/sirens on.

Stay safe out there.

Oh, that’s sad and horrible news. With speed limits being 25 MPH across downtown, I can’t help but wonder if that limit was being observed by the driver? We just have to do better as a city!

Not necessarily much about the bike lanes, but wanted to post up the various bikes I see around downtown. Tonight Burial was packed with bikes. This does not include all the bikes at Crank Arm for the usual Wednesday night ride.

Some bikes on West St.

Not really bike lanes, but infrastructure I’ll be using while biking.

Here’s some photos from the path on Blue Ridge Rd. It’s not fully completed, but it’s getting there.

Separately I ended up seeing a few people riding around on an e-trike downtown

Purely anecdotal, but I feel like I’ve seen a lot more bike riders around town recently. There were a lot parked at Spooky Hollow last night. I hope we can add some more bike parking around town to make it even easier.

Smokey Hollow is actually one of my pet peeves as far as bike parking goes. You have a downtown development that is literally surrounded by protected bike lanes with minimal bike parking for people who want to bike over to enjoy the retail.

There appears to be great bike parking for residents and office space folks, but not for those of us who want to bike over for dinner. I never really understood it since I think the development came after the bike lanes. Oh well.

It does make me happy to see more folks biking around downtown though! I’m hoping the momentum continues!

Downtown hasn’t installed a new bike corral in awhile. It’s probably time to get more of those going.

Are there any plans to repurpose the space that the cardinal bikes took up for general bike parking?

The perimeter streets around Smoky Hollow may be public, but the interior pedestrian plaza areas are private. The city would not be responsible for putting in bike parking there. That’s on Kane’s team.

Oh yeah I wasn’t insinuating that the city should do that, but it seems like as a developer I might take advantage of the surrounding bike infrastructure since it has the potential to bring more people to the space. But I guess bike parking doesn’t bring in as much revenue as the parking deck so there isn’t much incentive.

As someone who bikes to Smokey Hollow somewhat frequently it just always struck me as odd.

The City Center parking deck has a giant area right next to the main entrance that looks like it’s supposed to be intended for motorcycles and has giant signs that say ‘NO PARKING EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES’. It would be a great place to add bicycle parking.

Upcoming bike + walk audit of connectivity from West Raleigh to Lenovo Center. Seems like a good idea! Thank you to Jane Harrison and Oakes and Spokes.

I had the same feeling on my ride home today as I rode up Hillsborough Street and then Oberlin. It was around 6:30 and I saw at least 15 people on bikes at different intersections.

It wasn’t like there was some sort of group ride going on either. There was one group of three and then lots of people who seemed simply like they were on their way home. I’ve been riding in Raleigh for about 15 years and it just felt like there were more people in the streets this evening.

I have to say I love the lanes on Oberlin. It’s my commute route. I would like if the lanes went all the way to Glenwood and through the intersection at Fairview. I also would have like the lanes to remain where the islands are just south of Wade avenue instead of becoming sharrows. I’ve had a few cars try to race and get in front of me before we get to the island. Overall I have to say that I love it so far.

I’ll add that riding down Hillsborough near NC State is terrible when heading home. I took it to go down to Meredith college and get on the greenway. With the road being so busy, the lane being so narrow, the cars blocking the narrow bike lane, and the roundabouts, it’s definitely not a pleasant area to ride. There’s also construction near Dixie Trail which blocks the bike lane.

I can second the sentiment that Hillsborough st is not a pleasant place to ride and I’d love to see honestly all of Hillsborough st from the capital to the fair grounds redesigned to better accommodate buses bikes and pedestrians (know this is a huge ask and will probably not happen on my lifetime)

Anyone know if Phase 2 of the Neuse River trail reconstruction is now complete? Specifically, the section of trail from the pedestrian bridge north to Hedingham? The Greenway Alert page says it was to have been completed as of October 31, but that’s not what the map shows. Excited for the whole thing to reopen again, supposedly in a month!

yes I rode on it on the 31st

They did a nice job on the new sections. It’s all built to the 10-ft standard-- much wider than some of the older paths. And fiber reinforced plastic on bridges and boardwalks (instead of timber) for better traction.
