Bloc 83 - One Glenwood and Origin Hotel

I mean…I shout at the top of lungs how much more important the street view is than the postcard view and and I get a few nods and hahmms. Never any ‘likes’. I do get some snarky crap about how I’m a Nimby and don’t understand ‘progress’. Or maybe someone thinking they are the well balanced approach by somehow ‘having both’! Once the existing [cool] stuff is gone, its gone. Objective fact. New stuff can be built anywhere. Also objective fact. There is no way around it. New stuff can turn out ok, or even good, but its never the same, and risks being much worse. Look at Smoky Hollow’s ground floor along West Street. It flat out sucks. Same with the Peace St frontage.Edit: @John yeah I meant keeping and activating street levels (street view has forced its way into my lexicon from overuse of googlemaps.

I’ve been talking street level experience even back in the “olden days” before this new community format was created. I’m totally with you on that. We need to keep our streets activated that already are, and initiate activation where they are not. Now, I am not sure that this is the same in your book when you say “street view”, but I suppose that we aren’t that far off from each other.
Looking back on this, I would have supported a UDO that protected the approach to the Capitol building from about West St to the building itself. I would have agreed to a DX 5 or NX 5 designation for the half of those blocks that face Hillsborough. At the very least, I’d prefer a step-back of facades along that corridor to celebrate the approach to the Capitol Building.

I forgot to take a photo before the meetup last night but the hotel looks kind of meh.

It’s not done yet tho! There’s gonna be, um… a big red vertical stripe painted on it… And a sign for the hotel!
:persevere:

The last hope is that there’s something exciting to see through the first floor windows. As a building, it’s empty soul at best.

I’m hoping the two poles holding up the signal light in front of the hotel would be replaced with an arm mast like the other two at the intersection.

I’m pretty sure that’s going to happen. There’s already a “block” there in the sidewalk for one to be placed.

They had the new silver pole and arm lying in the grass across the street when I walked by yesterday. Intrigued by the red orange accent panelling I saw going up next to the white paneling.

Excellent news! Thanks for the info

I wish they would have done the larger windows on the entire building and not just the north east section. I think the smaller windows make the building look more dated from the outside. But I’m sure there is a reason for it from the inside.

Also, walked by the Mojito Lounge yesterday and thought that would be such a great location for a restaurant. I was thinking maybe an old school Italian place or something. Would love to see Christensen or Crawford put something in there. Would be great for people that stay in the Origin or the Willard and for the people in One and Two Glenwood.

And, I know a lot of people are sad about the old D&D tear down… myself included… BUT… I actually really like the new spot. And I think its in a great location! I love driving or walking by there and seeing it on the corner. Perfect for the people that work upstairs to walk down after work.

100% agree on the larger windows. That section looks great!.. then there’s the rest. Also, would it kill to get some COLOR?? This grey on grey is so drab.

Apparently putting up some orange trim on the front. A little different from the rendering.

I’m guessing that the orange is referential to OneGlenwood, or is that just coincidence or serendipity?

Now I’m reaaaaally hoping they put orange (or another complementary color) over the light grey on the rest of the facade to the right of this!

I think that’s all they’re putting up, that one section. That section hadn’t had finishing stucco/paint but the rest has that now.

Apparently they read this community’s posts
