Bloc 83 - One Glenwood and Origin Hotel

What material are you referring to?

If its that Styrofoam stuff, it is much cheaper, both in material and labor.

Construction fencing around the abandoned gas station where the parking deck will go is up now. I wonder if the old house is actually getting moved or torn down.

I noticed the new fence while walking the dog yesterday. It’s getting complicated to walk in that area these days.

I’m starting to think the house move was a rumor. I’ve heard that it was going to be moved somewhere on Hillsborough Street, but where?

I’m thinking the house is definitely getting demoed if it’s not out by now. We need to get the historic preservation folks ramped up with a better system IMO. The properties should get moved, it will be costly, but it’s important to not just plow over history from my vantage. Especially for a CONCRETE PARKING DECK. Gawd. :scream:

I just saw a FB post that the section of Boylan between Morgan and Hillsborough will be partially closing (then fully closing) to vehicular traffic during construction. That’s 0 - 100 S. Boylan. Remains to be seen, but the sources seemed legit.

It said it will remain open for ped traffic for the entire project – though I bet there will be days when that’s not accurate

Was at a CoreNet event last week on the rooftop deck. Early morning, so views are little blurred by the sun but they have awesome amenity space on the top floor.

Why Bloc 83? I’m going nuts trying to find a reference to this and other ā€˜Bloc’ numbers.

Bloc 82 was taken…

I was thinking that it might have some association with the Christmas Plan of 1797, but that site was outside of the original city limits. So, I’m stumped as to what reference point they may have used.

They indicated it’s because of that map and the original parcels of land. However, now that you mention it, that’s true that it’s outside of the city limits from that time period. According to that map, Bloc 83 was the NE corner of Davie and Salisbury, basically where Wake County Courthouse is now located.

Found it. Sanborn Map 1896. (Rotate clockwise by 90 degrees) Remembering that Glenwood was called (eventually North) Saunders Street at that time, and there is ā€˜Bloc 83.’

Boylan was also interrupted by Elmwood at that time, ergo the funky alignment of the intersection at ā€˜Hillsboro’

Was at Char-Grill last night for our typical Friday night burger. Sitting there on Block 59 at looking over to Bloc 83, I was wondering how long the north side of Hillsborough Street is going to be left as is. The former Dive Bar, Snoopy’s, Char-Grill, and the old service station at 630 Hillsborough. 610 Hillsborough and it’s resident/owners (being one of the very early infill projects in 1991) are likely an anchor of stability.

Our upcoming recession will probably keep them safe for awhile longer. Personally I don’t eat at either place and I’d love for that whole area to get bulldozed and turned into something like Bloc 83. I’m also aware I’m in the tiny minority on this.

I like a little character mixed in. I was in downtown Charlotte not too long ago and although impressive, at street level it felt uninviting. I will take my Block 141 abode over anything there.

Completely agree. That’s why it’s important to save places like flying saucer but still have development. Granted there are places that should and should not be torn down for development.

@Will I agree… definitely need to place certain places to keep the current Raleigh Charm… but can also add on like they are doing to the Historic Ideal Cleaning Co. & Lumsned Bros Building (Old Father and Son Building). I love how they kept the main building and added on to it. Keeps the street level charm.

We can also have a better street level experience with buildings that are not the same old crap they are putting in all over the place. Ware house district is another example how how we are developing it while keeping amazing street level experiences.
