Blue Ridge Corridor

It has been several weeks, but they planted grass on the southern side. Then they started driving steel on the northern side, but stopped after a day or so. I haven’t seen them out there since then.

There’s a lot of work going on near my doctor’s office. I’ll try to take some pictures after my appointment but the mixed-use path is at least 16ft.

A 52-unit townhouse/condo community will be built on Nowell Road, near the Lenovo Center. Pretty close to Blue Ridge Road, so I figured it was worth mentioning here…

I completely forgot to post these pictures but they’re not that great.

I’m happy this is getting done, 100%, but still surprised it was prioritized over Lake Wheeler, the most dangerous road in Raleigh and a future artery to downtown & Dix. Considering resource allocation appears to be the largest hurdle in getting all of these projects done concurrently, not funding. Instead it’s one at a time.

I may be wrong but this project may be a part of the Triangle Bikeway project so that would be a good reason.

Edit: It’s not a part of this project but it will be pretty close to it, which still may be why it was prioritized. Also, I believe the City needed federal funds for Lake Wheeler Rd.

I can’t tell where this is? Cross-Street?

No, Blue Ridge road near Rex Hospital.

It’s the portion of Blue Ridge that leads down to the mall (Crabtree).

FWIW, Blue Ridge from Ed Drive north is City controlled while South of Ed is NCDOT. NCDOT has to approve any work in their ROW. Ever seen NCDOT plans. So delay in approval. Lake Wheeler from Centennial Pkwy north to Saunders St. is COR while south of intersection with Centennial is NCDOT. I agree Lake Wheeler is gateway but not sure of the status of plans as there are usually utility (storm, water, sewer) work before road work can proceed.

I actually saw workers there working when I drove by yesterday.

I think it was mentioned in the Dix park chat that the project is scheduled to start in the spring.

Drove past the work zone today for the blue ridge rd pedestrian bridge over wade ave. Lots of activity going on…hopefully they’ll have it completed in the next decade or so

Saw this posted a few days ago on the city website, regarding the pedestrian bridge over Wade Ave:

Project Update - Jan. 2025
Due to coordination efforts with NCDOT, private, and public utilities the project is behind schedule. The good news is, crews have resumed work on this exciting project. The contractor has their team working on both the multi-use path and preparations for the install of the new pedestrian bridge.

City Council approved the construction bid award to Fred Smith Company in the fall of 2022.

Speaking of: I’d love to see a few pedestrian bridges over Wade as it gets closer into downtown - there’s a stretch from Glenwood exit to Capital Blvd ramp that has zero stoplights and thus zero pedestrian crosswalks, and I think (for future’s sake) it would be cool to have some sort of pedestrian connectivity from one side to the other, and then especially over Capital Blvd from West St over to Seaboard, especially once the Pigeon House Park (I don’t care, I’m calling it that) is active. I think it could be somewhat of an “attraction” for the park itself if there was some major pedestrian connectivity to it that would encourage people to walk to the park from areas where they’d currently absolutely have to drive. Make it a WIDE “boardwalk” style pedestrian bridge system that includes a walking lane and a two-way bike lane.

The concrete foundations are in place on either side. Now the middle is getting started.

I need this to be done before football season to cut my bike ride in half. Not getting my hopes up.
