Business Expansion in the Triangle

If epic games was cool they would take it. But no

Epic Games would be a great fit for that building.

I’m sure companies will wait until the Citrix lease is up. Also companies have been placing/moving their offices closer to freeways & interstates, which is easier for people commuting in from suburbs

Will be interesting to see what happens after the lease is up. Wonder if a developer could come in and build a high-rise on top of the existing building. Would also be nice to open that deck up to public parking.

Tim Apple announces major investment in Kentucky. Meanwhile the RTP “investment” continues to be a wonderful wildlife habitat.

It’s so bizarre. They are investing $600B but can’t find the $300mm to get going on the already Apple owned and shovel ready first phase of this project. The stalled RTP project was actually held up on the National news last night as a tale of caution example of “wait and see” if they really deliver.

To be fair the numbers they are throwing out are BS. This is what people do to buy off Trump. Just make up these multi year future investments and then quietly cancel them later. We saw it in Trumps first term as well. It’s a PR bribe.

Sure, but at minimum you’d think they might go ahead and get going on the feature project announced 4 years ago they do have that’s shovel ready.

Agree, we know this was a serious project. It is strange there is no movement.

My two cents worth :coin: :coin:

Reminder that an announcement to invest more money in the US can have zero to do with construction and as much to do with reinvestments like buy-backs, R&D, etc.

Epic wants a fortress with a secure perimeter behind a big berm. Do I think they need it, absolutely not - but it is basically what they tried to do a few years back at the Cary Towne Center site.

I do think they have some legitimate concerns about people suspiciously lurking around outside their offices in the past and that they could use a building with a gated parking deck and no ground floor office space. This means Citrix is not a good fit.

I am pretty sure Apple wants to build up more of their local workforce here before starting their campus. They have 800 people now in 2 buildings one in Cary and one in Durham. That is 800 jobs with Apple that were not here a few years ago. Give them some time they own the land and they will build it but I suspect only after building up their local workforce even more.

IKEA sees the following places as more worthy than the Triangle.

We are a bigger, wealthier market. What are we doing wrong here?

We are also full of college student and early in carrier professionals. We are also the second largest metro are in a fast growing and 9th most populated state in the nation.

These stores are about 1/10 the size of a normal IKEA. I don’t think that’s really anything to be envious of.

Maybe they just assume our area travels to the Charlotte one?

This, I’m also in the boat of supporting the creation of large thrift and antique stores (brick and mortar) and smaller pop-up shops.

One could presume that Raleigh is on their radar for an actual full sized Ikea in the future. One can dream!

Consider me one who could not care less about getting an IKEA

Yes, I agree that the most likely path for Ikea is a full-sized store. They’ve just gotten back into building those post-2020, but almost all of the ones due to open in 2025-2026 are in Texas.

  1. The Cary Towne Center plans indicated that they think the market is ready
  2. The Triangle is already along a distribution route (I-85 to Charlotte)
  3. Other retailers have distribution centers that feed their stores. IKEA’s large-format stores are their distribution centers; the small-format stores rely on a nearby full-sized store to ship from.

I cared a lot more when they initially proposed it and I had furniture to buy periodically. All this time later, I have a house full of furniture and don’t really think I’d downgrade it to their stuff. But I’d still enjoy having one here, especially the full-sized ones.
