Just playing around with some options. Given that many cities around the world just have bi-color or tricolor flags we really don’t need much. We really don’t have many symbols for the city at the moment. Sir Walter Raleigh coat of arms and oak trees so I played around with that.

I’m sure this is an unpopular opinion, but I don’t care for Sir Walter’s coat of arms on the flag. I get they named the city after him, but he has basically nothing to do with the city’s history, and had little impact on the state’s history outside of funding a colony that failed after a few years.

Besides… you know… literally the name of the city LOL. I get what you’re saying, but come on now - regardless of him actually never setting foot here nor having any impact on its development, he will forever be a part of the city’s “history” considering it is named after him. In that regard, I like his coat of arms on the city flag as almost more of an “insider knowledge” trivia tidbit.

Plus… he’s got a cool coat of arms with a great, ownable graphic element. It’s a gift to anyone designing stuff for the city.

True enough. Be a real stretch for landlocked Raleigh to make even a claim on Blackbeard, but what the hell, if Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz can have a city and county in NC, why can’t we just steal Blackbeard from down east? It would be the pirate way!

Thought I’d drop an in here. I really like the coat of arms diamonds that you see in the Granville county flag. I think the black makes it pop a little more. Sorry for the super grainy image.

Hello all! In October advocates for the new Raleigh flag will finally be making the case for the new flag to city council. Organizers are planning for public comment at city hall on Oct 8 and Oct 15.
This board has been friendly to the flag project, so we’re letting you know here that you can support the movement by coming out to city hall and joining us in the gallery. If you have a new Raleigh flag hat or t-shirt, wear it! Or just wear anything red. We’ll also have free mini flags for attendees to wave!
