Story about the New Raleigh Flag campaign aired this morning on Spectrum News 1.
Love it! Great spot!
Another story aired on CBS 17 news tonight:
It better than our current one, like 10x better. This could be on buses, City buildings. It’s so Raleigh.
Maybe more like this?
I posted a Gondor-style Raleigh flag to Reddit a while back and people generally hated it.
People on Reddit and Twitter hate everything tho
Heh Gondor style
I like it. I don’t see how a single-tone flag with just a logo on the center actually makes people drool. It needs something different like this
The geometry of the diamonds on the crest could be fixed a little, but overall looks good. I’m still one of those sticklers that wants the squirrel but I figure this one is already entrenched and gonna win.
The geometry of the diamonds reflect that of the original flag’s coat of arms. Not accidental.
Can y’all help out these guys and save us from these current options?

Those are hideous, but what does one expect when civil engineering students attempt graphic design? Too bad State doesn’t have a College of Design…oh wait.
I don’t even understand this- our state flag is honestly just fine as is lmao. Our city flag is what actually sucks. I would honestly NOT want to see the state flag changed. Red, white and blue and “NC” featured prominently = perfect as is.
Wellllll it is a more cluttered later knockoff of Texas’ flag (the tiny illegible writing on the date ribbons is a huge flag design no-no).
The Civil War era flag was much more unique and interesting, but, well, not exactly a high point in state history to revive.
We could update our current state flag and make it less busy just by removing the two dates from those two banners. I don’t think that we can remove the N and C though because it starts wading into TX flag territory.
The article mentions 2 students. Who cares? Not worth spending any time thinking about this.
The state flag is not great and I could be down for updating it. None of the designs they are suggesting look better to me though. Changing the state flag is a big deal and should not be done flippantly. It’s one of the oldest state flags still in use, and NC managed to avoid confederate symbolism on its flag, so we never HAD to change it like a lot of southern states did, and that itself is kind of a source of pride.
The first date is the Mecklenburg Declaration which is actually the one thing on the flag I kind of like. It’s bold and actually something unique about the state. ‘NC’ is tacky and would be the first thing I’d get rid of. The similarity to the Texas flag is a big problem… could revert to the original color pattern but that would be controversial.
*Mecklenburg Resolves. The “Mecklenburg Declaration” never happened
The Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence no longer attracts much attention from professional historians, who generally regard the document as spurious. If the declaration is mentioned in scholarly works, it is usually to discount it.
The Meck Deck obviously didn’t happen. But it’s a funny thing… NC’s insistence on clinging to this crypto-history has itself become the interesting piece of history. So it’s cool in my book.
Heck, put the Wright Flyer on the flag too just to piss off Ohio.
I am aware of the meaning of the two dates.
I would still remove them and simplify the flag if it were up to me, but I don’t hate the flag or find the dates offensive enough to die on that hill.
