Nice story about the flag in this morning’s RALToday newsletter. Link to online copy:

I personally think it could use a little pop. Maybe add a black stripe like this

Personal preference of course, but I like the solid background.

Honestly our existing flag wouldn’t be so bad if it were only the backside. It’s those stupid city or state seals that I can’t stand!

That said, I do like the simplicity of the acorn design with just one background color. That said, the background color could change. With it being a secondary/complementary flag, why not add a little flexibility into the equation? You can have alternating red and green background flags for Christmas displays, orange for Halloween, brown and yelllow for Thanksgiving, purple for Easter, red and blue for Memorial Day & July 4th, and a rainbow of background colors for pride.

You don’t love “completely indistinguishable from Peru unless you’re right to it”?

When did I say that?

Just being facetious. I thought the implication was that you didn’t like seals because they’re complicated and hard to tell apart, ergo Raleigh and Peru’s current flags look identical from far away.

What would the black stripe represent?

I would love to see the Hurricanes have a City of Raleigh flag-inspired alternate jersey. The Durham Bulls did something similar with their city flag not too long ago.

I don’t like seals on flags because they are lazy, boring, and thoughtless representations.
Now, if the city had a seal as a mascot, then by all means put a seal on it. :seal:

I didn’t realize until recently why Sir Walter Raleigh’s coat of arms has a deer on it. The word ‘Raleigh’ in olde English meant ‘meadow of the deer’.

That’s really interesting!

When I first moved here (and for an embarrassingly long time after) I thought I was seeing the Peruvian flag everywhere

Ironically, Peru simplified their civil flag by removing the coat of arms. But their “state flag”, which is used ceremonially, still bears the coat of arms.

The word “leigh”, meaning “meadow” is sometimes now spelled as “-ly” or “-ley” in English names. So “Kimberly” = “royal meadow”, “Ashley” = “meadow of ash trees”, and so on.

Hey @GucciLittlePenguin you’re a royal meadow! Neat.

Obviously. :crown:
All I can find for Jeff is the Jeffrey at Taco Bamba. I assume I was named for this.

Well, I was named for a toilet so count your blessings.

Saw one of these Raleigh acorn flags on a house on Brooks Ave yesterday on my bike ride. Somewhere between Banbury Road and Wade Ave.
