That doesnāt change the fact that āupstateā and ādownstateā donāt really exist. No one from Western NY/Niagara frontier would say they live in Upstate NY.

Iāve heard plenty of people from the northern Hudson Valley / Albany area say they live in Upstate. I think itās more that thereās a third broader region around Buffalo called Western NY.

Thats fine but its essentially the same thing as saying I live in North Carolina. Upstate NY is 90% of the state and just refers to everywhere not in NYC/Long Island. Its a term used by people in the city and idiots in other regions who are lazy or donāt know any better.
