Dorothea Dix Park

Dix Park Conservancy said last weekend their attendance was 25,000 to see the trolls (I believe they said they use Placer.ai for the data).

Getting a really beautiful piece of public art but putting it way out in the suburbs is like the Charlottiest thing ever.

Our glass highrises uptown sometimes give off a death ray beam of light which could ignite a wooden troll so better he is in the woods.

Also some much needed drivers ed for the kids.

Site fencing has gone up around the Flower Cottage.

Wife and I are very, very excited for the coffee shop on this side of the park.

Fencing extends to the road/parking area next to the house.

Saw this got leased to a combo of the Person / Natty Science / Locals crew……Coffee / light cafe upstairs and light beverage / bites below.

That’ll hopefully yield a nice park amenity.

Took my mom and stepdad to Dix and they were very impressed. So many people enjoying it too yesterday on a gorgeous Saturday. Also visited DT Cary park, and they thought both were really well done.

Finally went to go see the trolls (which were awesome) and ride the Dix Park Shuttle with my partner. The shuttle is very poorly signed and documented. There’s no clear indicator of the route, or the frequency, only the span is noted online. The vehicles aren’t ADA Compliant either, which feels like the compelling use case for it.

You also need to ask the driver verbally to stop and they’ll basically stop wherever. It was busy but multiple groups on board weren’t clear how to get off or where they could. I did really like how it was warm on a cold day though.

I was often pondering while onboard how many different agencies within the city of Raleigh operate buses and if they ever coordinate best practices because they felt like they could learn some from Transit.

What do you mean “poorly signed and documented” it says (*whispering) ᴿᵃˡᵉᶦᵍʰ right there!!!

I’m not sure why the advertised setup is but it seems like they should just have a cycle of 2-3 stops at main park areas

They have like probably 7-10 stops done in a one way loop but they’re just labeled “SHUTTLE” and there’s no indicator of frequency or route, even online. Span is indicated online but nowhere else.

I feel like it should at least interchange with the GoRaleigh and GoTriangle stops surrounding the park but they don’t. It should also definitely have some indicator of frequency expectations somewhere, even if we can’t get real-time data.

Then again, I’m not sure if this is supposed to be a long term service or not.

Lots of people still checking out the trolls at Dix.

I liked this installation as well, which I hadn’t seen before.

Christmas tree was still up also.

I’m telling you, these trolls have been the biggest boon to park attendance imaginable!

The trolls have even got people coming up to Durant Nature park to try and find the Grandmother tree.

Saw all 5 of your trolls in Dix Park today had to use a map online I did not have time to “find” them. There were out of town tourists there looking at them too. Remember we have one Pete in Charlotte and he seems larger than all of these.

If Charlotte Pete is larger than all of the Dix Park Trolls, he must be one LARGE TROLL. I thought the Dix trolls were huge but then again I don’t have anything to compare them to. Except Dang. My idea of a big troll may be off.

Here is Pete with the big feet.
