Dorothea Dix Park

If only Raleigh was quick to act on these ideas. This does look incredible.

An informative comparison might be Gathering Place in Tulsa, which is linked in the above -

I just reviewed the site and saw The Gathering Place in Tulsa. It is a masterpiece. Wow!

I tried to go to the Gathering Place when I was in Tulsa for a marathon in 2021. I very slowly crept through the park (as there were 0 parking spots) and from what I could see it was amazing and PACKED!! The race course went by the park along the river and under the “tunnels” connecting the park to the river front. It was really nice from the tiny bit I could see during my very brief trip out there. Hoping Dix will have vibes of The Gathering Place when it is ultimately fully built out.

It all comes down to money that nobody wants to spend, just like the Six Forks Rd. improvement project.
Everyone just wants lower taxes. Even when folks vote for a park or school bond, many eventually complain when their property tax goes up 100 bucks.

Not my cup of tea, but think this festival has been great for the artists and city alike. I really hope this festival continues to be successful for many years to come.

Am i the only one that thinks the play plaza is a waste of prime real estate, considering its proximity to Pullen park? They could’ve made improvements to Pullen instead of making a fun park adjacent to a fun park.

I don’t think Dix Park is that fun yet so maybe this will help? But I’m glad you… cam clean about how you feel.

Yes

It’s about 2 miles. So not really all that close.

If in a walkable location, I might agree with you. However, 2 miles in a car is next to nothing.

Its only one mile. IDK, that seems pretty close to me and a bit much for another “fun” park.

This park will also be a little larger. Plus the goal is to make this area more walkable but first you have to make it a place worth walking to.

Have you seen how swamped with crowds Pullen becomes on nice days? Clearly there is demand for more, but there isn’t much room at Pullen to put more stuff in, without taking something out. Perhaps the amusements could be expanded across the RR tracks to replace the softball fields, but I’m not sure at all how well received that would be.

Besides, having something that is actually closer walking distance from downtown is definitely a good thing.

And what would you put in that space, besides a play area?

You’ve never walked a mile with a toddler - have you?

High density, mixed use, with mixed income residential. Most of the high density projects are filled with and people without kids. People with kids and or average incomes aren’t going to be living in rockway or the weld.

Of course I have. Walked alone and carried them on my shoulders too. I’m over 40, so no i don’t complain about a mile walk…lol

When I was a kid, we had to walk 20 miles to school in blinding snowstorms with a toddler in each hand and two on our shoulders!
