I know you’re being sarcastic, and this is directed at people who actually mean stuff like that…
I hate that argument. Parks, highways, light rail, cops, firefighters, schools don’t exactly pay for themselves but still provide an important public service. I’d much rather have a downtown amphitheatre than a bigger convention center.
I don’t know if anyone has any of information on what this could be, but my grandfather who is currently working on FNB is going to be working on a project where the current McDonald’s is on Wilmington St. I have no idea how big or small this project is, or if it was announced and I didn’t hear, but I wanted to bring this up and see the discussion on what this could be.
Yeah, this is lackluster. Raleigh could support a JW, Ritz, Thompson, etc. I wonder how long if ever one of these may appear. Where do the visiting NHL teams stay?
Visiting NHL teams stay at Renaissance Raleigh North Hills Hotel.
Some also do the Umstead Hotel (top class in the Triangle) in Cary, which is minutes from the stadium.
People don’t just stay at the Umstead because it’s on the highway. They stay there because it’s the best hotel. If someone built the best hotel downtown people would stay there because it’s the best hotel and it’s downtown as a plus. I’m not sure why hotel developers are afraid of putting something nice downtown.
Downtown currently has 2 main “industries”. One is the state government, and the other one is tech. Neither is the type of clientele that spends a lot of money on hotel stays. If you add conventions to the mix, they too aren’t going to demand high end accommodations. This might be the reason why developers are gun shy.
That said, if The Umstead can work in Cary, then clearly a luxury destination hotel can succeed in downtown.
