Today’s TBJ has some good pictures of The Origin Hotel in downtown .
I didn’t see a mention of this rezoning request or future development elsewhere so I’ll drop it here. If it exists already, please feel free to move the post or I can delete it if it’s duplicate info.

Given I can’t see the full article, here’s a quick quote from the picture caption, “half-acre property to allow for the development of a new hotel on the site at the Pullen Drive roundabout”.
Maybe this is the open parking next to PRs on the corner?
I guess the condo project for this site is officially belly-up?

That was my first thought too.
It might be that the project is just the part by the roundabout?
It appears it was the round shaped proposal on the corner that is now shelved, which is unfortunate I really liked the look of that building.
There are two parcels in the purchase 1912 Hillsborough and 2 Pullen Rd.
Here a couple qoutes from the article :
"the developer said the proposed hotel would likely feature less than 135 rooms, and while no hotel flag had yet been finalized, they felt a Marriott brand was most likely. "
“Specific designs for the building have yet to be finalized, and zoning conditions would limit any restaurant or retail use on the property to no more than 6,000 square feet. Development on the Pullen Road parcel would be restricted to a commercial parking facility up to three stories tall.”
So, it’s only the two parcels that are currently surface parking lots.
For everyone’s benefit, the two parcels are across the street from one another, with 2 Pullen Rd. on northwest side of the Pullen/Oberlin roundabout
Correct, 2 Pullen Rd:
And 1912 Hillsborough St :
ugh this still hurts. You should’ve seen the street views of this; they were beautiful, even in the concept stage. Killed by NIMBYs.
I thought I heard recently that this was never really a serious proposal and was just something Gus was just tossing around to see if there would be buy-in from other groups??
It was never serious in the sense that it was very early stages and only a concept – never made it to schematic design. Still, we worked on it for a few weeks in the office (I was not personally on the design team, but the lead designer sat next to me and we often bounced ideas off each other). My understanding is that the response in the Hillsborough CAC and Wade CAC meetings was so strong that the developer didn’t pursue it further, but I am not sure if there were other factors that killed it.
There’s an old itbinsider post about it: “Attendees expressed concerns over a variety of issues, including traffic, fitting in greenspace, needing clarity on the number of stories and height, the aesthetics, character and scale compared to the surrounding neighborhoods, the impact of adding 500 cars and offices to rush hour traffic, parking, and more.”
New update on the remaining hotel projects:
Four of the major hotel projects that were supposed to break ground this year have NOT been cancelled but likely pushed back probably until late 2021 or early 2022. Nash Hotel specifically mentioned as ‘on hold’.
See timestamped video below:
Of all the proposed hotels in the queue, I want the Nash Square hotel to go up more than any of the others.
Raleigh needs more boutique hotels. Speaking of which, have y’all heard of Heights House on the corner of Boylan and Mountford yet? Sorry for not scrolling up too far… I’m new to this thread.
I haven’t, but that looks amazing!
I’m guessing that’s the evolution of the ‘Mountford Hall’ project…?
It’s got an N + O article on it from late summer last year, I think…
Yes it is. Someone from the Boylan Heights group on Facebook was complaining that they changed the name. I’m like…when you buy and convert a historic building, you can call it whatever you want. Anyways, maybe me think of American Horry Story (Murder House), so that’s cool!
Heights House at Mountford Hall.
Problem solved.
That sounds pretty long for a hip boutique hotel.
