Downtown & ITB Beers

Fullsteam complains endlessly about all the construction by them in Durham. If they moved to City Market, they’d be guaranteed no construction since the property owner doesn’t do anything whatsoever with that area.

I do feel bad for them. When I was by Motorco the other night, they were in a pretty forbidding construction cul-de-sac. Everywhere else was busy and they seemed a bit empty.

I do feel bad for the current situation, but honestly I go there more just to check out the construction. But I’m weird. In the end though, that whole area is going to be filled with people, i.e. new customers. Geer St Garden complains more actually, and also looks to substantially benefit after the inconvenience of living by construction.

Yeah that doesn’t surprise me honestly, they are surrounded by all sorts of abandoned looking car lots and tow yards + that big Geerhouse/Motorco development. That whole area of Durm has seen so much development at a ridiculously fast pace too. My buddy lived out there off Geer street 2014-2016 and it looks nothing like it used to over there.

I feel Hi-Wire could be another good option. I’ve only been to their Durham spot but know they got stuff all over Asheville and got places in Charlotte and Wilmington too. Not sure if they shoot for the gigantic footprint type of places like the Durham one specifically.

Yeah, they really need to put this in perspective. I’d go to the worst brewery in the state twice a week if I lived next door to it. Fullsteam is legitimately good and already has loyal customers, so all that construction is going to pay off quite well for them if they can just push through the noise and street closures for a couple years.

I would be amped on getting Bearded Bee or Wooden Robot in Raleigh. Red Oak would also be phenomenal, but I have a feeling they’re committed to the whole “beer hall” thing (which is really cool, no complaints). My guess is they’d want a bigger space than what they could get in DTR.

To add to this, as I just read this. I think they’ll be alright in the long term as Durham is now going to get into the social district game too. Unlike Raleigh, they’re going to do their whole downtown area as defined by the city of Durham. Based on the map in the article, I think it would include Fullsteam and the surrounding area.

I love that you mentioned Bearded Bee and I’d lobby HARD for that if there were a possibility (I have actually), but Derek wants to skirt Raleigh to less competitive neighborhoods (like Wake Forest) vs going right for the heart in Downtown Raleigh. A shame, because I know they’d kill it in the right space.

Wonder if he would consider SW Wake county (Apex, Holly Springs, or FV) as less competitive? Not saying it’s over-saturated around here, but there’s a decent amount of breweries. I just read that Oaklyn Springs from FV is opening up a new (their third) taproom in downtown Apex in a month or so as well.

All that being said, I’d highly welcome Bearded Bee numero dos in this part of town.

I wonder if someone got their wires crossed on which brewery it was, New Anthem announced that they’re coming to Raleigh, “Glenwood Annex” referenced.

New Anthem Beer Project on Instagram: "Coming Soon. Glenwood Annex. Love you Raleigh."

They said in the comments Glenwood South neighborhood so I guess we’ll see. Nice find, btw. I’m excited for this!

I freaking LOVE New Anthem. I can’t wait to learn more. Thank you!

Where does South Glenwood stop and the rest of Glenwood start? I’d say Peace Street but I’m assuming a minority may say somewhere further North

I feel like Glenwood South does start at Peace St. And I’m always right, so…

As much as it pains to me to agree with @GucciLittlePig , I agree that it ends at Peace, but I think that I’d include the north side of Peace as well. Then again, I don’t subscribe to the idea of a street having one neighborhood on one side of the street and another one on the other side of the street.

This could also be Smoky Hollow…

Didn’t someone also say that Bloc 83 had a brewery tenant onboard? Could this be them?

You’re right! And that would fit the GS distinction!

And @OakCityKarla just reminded me that Lindsay at 321 Coffee mentioned a brewery going in there somewhere. Yay!!!

That’s fantastic. One could make the argument they’re the best brewery in the state, pound-for-pound. Huge coup for the Raleigh beer scene.
