Downtown & ITB Beers

That sounds fantastic. We went to Belgium on our honeymoon and had the chance to visit Westvleteren, I love that kinda thing.

Most bottles on sale in the area seem to be local, which is awesome! I definitely get my share of excellent local beer, I’m just on the hunt for a shop that puts a similar effort into imports. Nothing against local craft breweries, but there’s just something special about beer brewed by monks. I had a 1.5L of Andrechs Maibock at Guglhuph in the summer, it got kinda warm and flat… But it was still amazingly complex and tasty the whole way. I haven’t been able to replicate that experience with local stuff.

I posted originally having visited Total Wine in Crossroads and coming up empty handed. Might try North Hills if I have a reason to drive up there.

Woke up to this news today. I know this is gonna get some protest replies, but I still think this place and Transfer are straddling the border of desirable downtown and the wild east. This isn’t an everyday occurrence, but this kind of thing is always in the back of my mind when I’m in the area. I still remember the UPS guy that got shot in broad daylight down the street from Transfer a couple years ago. Anyways, not a great thing to hear happened.

Gosh, that’s wild, Roshambo is a nice spot. Downside of being on the edge of the gentrifying zone.

I was talking to someone from Cincinnati last night about how their Over-the-Rhine neighborhood used to have the most murders per square mile in the city even as it was turning into the fun, safe nightlife district it is now. Glad no one was hurt in this case.

My neighbors and I have become all to familiar with these instances, and they always seem to originate from the same trouble homes or areas. It gets better each year, but yea the UPs shooting really spooked all of us in the area. 2020 was probably the worst since we’ve moved downtown, with most of the instances not even making the news, and some look like a war zone with shell casings.

In 2020 we had some friends over for a cookout, around 2-3pm in the afternoon two cars were chasing each other down our street SHOOTING AT EACH OTHER. Bullets hit our neighbors fence posts, roof of someone’s house, then through the hood and engine of a parked car totaling it. Two separate neighbors moved within weeks of this happening.

I used to live on the East Street side of the Lincoln, and saw some wild crime on occasion. The parking garage also had very frequent car break-ins. But the stray bullet at roshambo is pretty bad for the area. I have a friend who was there at the time, and luckily it was pretty dead compared to other times so no one got close to being hurt.

Edit: by bad for the area, I mean it isn’t a regular occurrence.

Salty Turtle Beer Company out of Surf City just announced a Raleigh taproom coming in February. Excited for this one.

Cool name, and sounds like it should partner with the Sneaky Penguin brewery. Sad to see it’s pretty far from downtown or anywhere I go. Maybe they’ll move closer if I ask nicely.

A little bit closer but not exactly ITB - Edit Beer is having a soft opening today per their Instagram.

Oof, hadn’t seen the address 'til now. That’s not too close!

Looks like they’re taking the Barrel Culture space since it’s the same address. Hopefully they have better luck than they did there.

That’s correct. Salty Turtle’s Turtle Tinsel Christmas Ale is available on tap now at Riparian Provision Company. 1408 S. Saunders Street. Had some yesterday and it’s quite good.

I am firmly not on the Charlotte is better than Raleigh train, but I was really impressed with Old Mecklenburg Brewing when we went to visit my wife’s cousins down there last weekend. Very cool space and beer. Could not think of a Raleigh version of that. Why hasn’t anyone done a German Style Brau House in Raleigh?

Yeah Cap Club is great, Ramschnitzel is one of the best dishes in the city imo. But it doesn’t quite have the tap variety or rotation of a place like Guglhuph. Then again, if I could bike to Guglhuph… I would be in very poor health.

In other news, I finally actually went to Burial. I’ve kinda ignored it since they’re so hop-centric despite it being so close to me. But I really like their Vienna lager, Rust. Very solid and doesn’t lose the malt among the hops!

Good for them! It’s a fun stop on the way back from the beach. Found their merch better than their beer last time I was there, but maybe I ordered the wrong thing. (And to be fair, their apparel is really nice)

because we live in Raleigh, not Berlin? charlotte usa has always been willing to pretend to be something they are not. “Esse Quam Videri” is the reverse for that town…

I live in Raleigh, not Beijing or Beirut or Seoul or Guadalajara or Ho Chi Minh City, but weirdly enough there are excellent Chinese, Lebanese, Korean, Mexican and Vietnam restaurants within walking distance of my office downtown. Strange. Videri quam esse, I guess.

There’s absolutely no reason why Raleigh couldn’t or shouldn’t have a German-style brau house like Old Mecklenburg Brewery. (Mecklenburg, you say? Hmm, I wonder where that name comes from. Oh well, probably not worth thinking too hard about.) Stuff just happens for all kinds of random reasons. Hopefully somebody will take the plunge and try out that concept here!

Ha, good point. Extra points if anyone knows why Charlotte is in Mecklenburg!!

Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was Mad King George’s wife. Apparently they named the city and county prior to the Revolutionary War…

For months there’s been an awning on Blount St., between Martin and Davie, that says “R¿DDLE - Eats, Drinks, Fun,” but the space there is closed up. Is this place ever coming back? Is anything ever going to open up there?

… Unless that’s the riddle.
