Downtown South development

just using google maps measurement tool.

I was looking at the ‘stream’.

Raleigh is not like Charlotte, just as San Jose is not like SF. Different cities, different strengths. Charlotte gets bank relocations, because the workforce is there for them to pilfer. Raleigh is more known for tech & tech startups. Charlotte is the insecure big sister, looking over it’s shoulder.

I receive the charlotte tv stations and their news totally ignores Raleigh. They also seem to think anything within 100 miles is part of their little city.

The Amazon HQ2 soap opera was a textbook example of their insecurities. When they didn’t even make the 1st cut and Raleigh made the final 20, the spin job they tried to paint was almost sad, laughable at some level. They knew the implications of not making the cut was “you aren’t cool enough nor are you smart enough” and hurt their collective ego to such a level, they were almost in a collective self therapy session in their media outlets that kept repeating how cool they were to make them believe an alternate reality.

One really interesting thing coming out of this to me is the idea that there is nothing else in the pipeline asking for this money. As a city, public, non-profits and business community how are there not 100 different projects asking for money? Like Dix park, won’t that be a big pull for visitors? Do they not need money? Either people with big ideas don’t know how to ask for this money or we just have a complete lacking of people who want to do things in our city that could use this money. Maybe there is something about how things are set up which just advantages Convention Centers, Stadiums, and then a big museum or two is able to get into that ballpark.

City data’s NC section is very anti Raleigh. The Charlotte folks for whatever reason must be threatened by Raleigh because they find away to be negative about virtually everything that’s happening in the city and why it’s not good enough in comparison to what Charlotte is doing or has. But now even the Triad crowd seem to be jealous of Raleigh and it’s rate of development that they also either diminish it while making comparisons to what they view as the true “big city” in the state, Charlotte. Or they try to act as if Raleigh is too bland now because it has grown significantly larger then the other cities. Raleigh suffers middle child syndrome on City data unfortunately.

It’s not just NC’s other cities that pile the hate/shade on Raleigh; it comes from places like Richmond too.
Interestingly, the Triangle’s sub-forum is the most active of all sub-forums on all of City-Data. The participation in it keeps putting distance on Charlotte’s sub-forum.

There are different sections of the interlocal funds, large projects and small projects. There are currently 8 responses to the request for information. The projects are
Centennial Authority - PNC Arena Renovations
City of Raleigh - convention center expansion and hotel AND Dix Park Amphitheater
Friends Of Wake - Stadium/ sports complex study
Marbles - Expansion
NCFC- SoDo
NCMOA - renovations
Cary - Indoor Multiuse Sports Facility
William Peace - Performance Theater

I don’t have time to work out all the asks and how that would break down year over year but it looks like there is almost enough money to go around for all of them. Especially if you account for growth in the hotel and hospitality tax year over year.

  • I should note that the NCFC request dated 1/10/19 is still mostly referencing the Peace plans but the ask appears to be about the same. I’m assuming they’ll file an amended request or proceed as is and just use the funds for the new site.

I’ve looked for more info on this group but haven’t been able to find anything. The proposal lists Leonard Holden and Tom Bradshaw (he of the Beltline fame and former mayor I believe) as contacts to reach for more information. This was for southeast Raleigh so maybe they’ll withdraw with the NCFC/Kane plan?

It should be DoSo, right? Just want to make sure they aren’t suggesting a backwards shortened version than Downtown South.

I like South Valley, it’s a low spot south of downtown and gives a little bit of CA feel for some reason. (the valley south of SF) LOL

If we get too cutesy with the names, it will start to sound suburban.

I like Penmarc?

“Headin’ to Penmarc with some mates, gonna have a few pints before the match”

I apologize to myself on behalf of myself…

Sounds too much like a store. Popular in Britain “Primark” will probably open a store in Raleigh eventually now that they’re expanding from New York.

SoDoR - said “so door”.

SoDoNoFo

Starting to sound like that South Park district.
