They are not going to chartlotte usa. charlotte is one of the smallest metros in america with 2 pro sports teams. granted they have no college competition for dollars but there’s only so much discretionary income and trying to have the NHL & NBA for a metro that’s barely a 100K or so larger than Raleigh’s ain’t going to happen. Do you really think current Raleigh residents/canes fans would blindly continue to support the Canes if they moved to charlotte usa?
just watch how few Raleighites attend/care about the Michael Jordan owned BobHornets.
This would be an interesting fact/tidbit…if its true. It would play very nicely into an argument of ‘why spend $500M on an aging building when you could spend a little bit more for a brand new, state of the art building. The "i know the cost of everything but value of nothing’ crowd will bitch regardless but their arguments would be very muted if this ‘structural integrity’ thing…is a real thing.
Really? The structure is such that its aging that quickly? I realize the building is not new, still . . . How old is Madison Sq Garden? 1972? I guess they just don’t build things like they use to.
NY has been in the process of tearing down Madison Square Gardens going on 3 decades. But too many moving pieces, too many egoes. I think Dolan was basically offered a free arena across the street but squabbled over signage and then the deal collapsed.
They completely reno’d MSG 7 years ago it’s essentially a “new“ arena. Did it all for about one billion dollars… wonder what a completely new building g would have cost?
The cost to move MSG has been estimated to be around $5B. And, because the Dolans weren’t moving on their own accord, that tab would have been on the city.
As it stands, with the new Penn Station proposals just being announced, MSG stays put and the MTA will work around it. But, the Paramount/Hulu Theater gets demolished to make a new block-wide entrance fronting on Eighth Ave.
I think it was part of a near billion transformation of the post office across the street when announced in the 90s, into a dual arena and train depot. It ballooned over the years but I think Dolan finally killed his involvement right around the time Spitzer resigned.
Yup. There had been talk of parking MSG on top of Moynihan/Farley. But, the financing fizzled out for reasons too numerous to count, and changes in various administrations with the state, city, and MTA.
And, I’m not sure that there wouldn’t have been the same engineering debacle that happened with the current iteration of MSG in 1965 when the old Penn headhouse was taken down. There was a lot of piling that had to happen to be able to support the arena which is still evident at track level to this day.
The Canes have a lease with the Centennial Authority through 2024. Last year the city/county authorized borrowing $130 million for renovations, to be paid off over 25 years, beginning in FY 21 (so ending in FY 45).
The CA is looking to negotiate a lease extension for around 20 years, and those negotiations are likely to be successful. We’re not going to lose the Hurricanes. They’re going to be staying right where they are, in PNC Arena, most likely through 2044. I guess we’ll all just see what the year 2045 brings us, but for now, we can all look forward to decades of cheering on our beloved Canes in their current location!
The Carolina Hurricanes will NOT be a tenant of the current PNC arena for 25+ more years. I will guarantee that. If they are there in 10 I’ll be shocked. We all know your distaste for public funding for big things…unless its a library Dave!
If they are going to remain in the Triangle, the franchise will follow the money, and there’s more fan base money in Raleigh/Wake than in Durham city/county.
There are way more people and higher household incomes in Raleigh/Wake.
Whatever, dude. My name is David Donovan and I look like the guy in my profile picture and I’m the editor in chief of Lawyers Weekly, and besides libraries I’m also a huge fan of public transit and children’s museums. But whatever predictions or criticisms I make on this forum, I’ll always put my real name and likeness behind them.
I can’t tell which of David’s posts are trolls or not but I love it. You folks get triggered too easily about MLB and downtown stadiums. I never understood why the arena wasn’t downtown originally but you can’t get mad at David just because he has an opinion and uses facts to justify it. The only literal chance of a new stadium is the downtown south project and I don’t see that happening anytime soon. It doesn’t make any financial sense based on where funding went. I see stadiums in many downtown cities honestly as dead areas whenever there is not a game (San Diego, Denver, etc) having visited them just this year. If we building anything let’s make sure it’s not a dead zone.
I’m a open book on any information about Raleigh I can tell you exactly why it didn’t go Downtown lol, for one Downtown Raleigh was nothing what it is now, it was really a seriously depressing place, and you wouldn’t want to get caught there after sundown, number two The powerful Mayor Tom Fezter didn’t even want to give any public funds to the Arena at any location at all and was against it being Downtown and alot of people didn’t push it because again Downtown Raleigh was a lackluster place, third N.C.State University was against it being Downtown and since they had available Land it was a no brainer .
