I think we can talk about national politics without getting personal. I know we have a few different views around here, but that’s okay. Ultimately, this is a forum about local politics. Trying to avoid talking about politics when everything we already talk about IS politics is a bit of an uncomfortable balancing act.
When it comes to urban development we are probably trying to maintain a shaky peace because those issues often don’t split along left/right lines. There are right wing and left wing NIMBYs, and there are right wing and left wing urbanists. We’re all vaguely on the same page on the latter issue so I get that we’re all reluctant to get into other issues too deeply, lest we disturb the peace.
But actually I think talking about those other things, so long as we do it without getting personal, can be a good thing.
For the record I am prepared to support anyone against Trump except probably Bloomberg. I was also deeply disappointed to learn about all of these local figures endorsing him. MAB, McFarlane, Meeker, and Perdue (well, she wasn’t remembered fondly so that’s not much of a loss)… Gives you some idea of what the real local machine’s colors are.
Wait what happened, I come back in town and see Mayor Pete has dropped out of the race? Did something happen while he was in Raleigh? This is really unfortunate news.
He lost SC badly and had no viable shot at much more than a marginal Super Tuesday delegate haul. Klobuchar and Warren will stay in to prevent Sanders from winning their state, but it’s likely they drop out soon after. Who knows what Bloomberg will do.
I am curious if anyone voted early (y’all can do that right?) and if their vote went for anyone who is now out of the race. How annoying would that be? Personally, I’d be hot.
There are still multiple other races on the ballot. I voted early and unfortunately am doubting the viability of my presidential candidates campaign. Also, I know personally that I might be less likely to make it to vote in the designated 12 hours on one day versus having my choice of days for a 3 week span.
If you’re happy with the current administration, fine. If not, chill on the other candidate & their supporters. We must ALL come together in November. I will vote for a socialist over a lunatic any day.
Yeah that was one reason I was waiting to vote until Super Tuesday. I’ve never had a problem getting to my polling place on the regular day, and I’ve never missed an election in 20 years.
Just another reason why primaries (at least) should use ranked choice voting. Especially with a field like this one. And I think it’s beneficial whether your vote early or on election day.
I agree with a lot of these sentiments. I voted early for Bernie, but I’ll admit his left-wing NIMBYism raises some alarm bells with me. No candidate is perfect, of course. I too was very upset to see MAB endorse Bloomberg. I gotta wonder whether she’s got a motive to do so (Bloomberg likes to dump his fortune on cities, of course) which would be disappointing but understandable. If it’s for Bloomberg’s actual record, especially w/r/t race issues while he was mayor, then that’s quite scary IMO.
Didn’t see that MAB endorsed Bloomberg. That’s unfortunate. Best bet optics-wise would have been to sit this one out.
I know we talk a lot about actual politicians in this city, but IMO the political operatives are extremely out of touch and working playbooks from 2002. They should share some of the blame for NC’s poor political posture nationally.
The Pete rally was fantastic. There were more than 4000 people crammed into Broughton gym with spill over into a second gym. Great enthusiasm and great respect all around. Several times he used the words “hope” and “humility” in such a way that I thought he might drop out. He is a great speaker and inclusive in his rhetoric which is quite refreshing for a lot of us.
Uhh, where are you getting that I support the current administration in any way??? Lmao no. I was joking at the fact that Pete dropped. Also Sanders is not a socialist, no matter what the state run media tells you. And I will vote for him as I did in the last primary with pride.
Just remember MAB, Mcfrlarland, Meeker probably endorsed him because Bloomberg probably said to him oh remember when I did this for you and they probably made a compromise. I bet ya when they at the polls it’s gonna be anything but him they’ll probably vote for Sanders.
I’m assuming Bloomberg just paid them off. It’s like a social experiment to see if you can just buy the presidency if your campaign has infinite money.
Cooper wisely is staying out of it, at least. Best thing he can do is just not talk about the presidency ever. Maintaining his veto will be necessary, regardless of what else happens.
