Fayetteville Street Developments and Vitality

Oh come on now - take em over to the new Gipson Plaza in Dix!!! It’s a landscaping work-of-art, surely they can’t trash talk that!!! It’s “walkable” if you take them through the Warehouse dist (some food + shopping options) then over South St retail area (shopping), then Dix!

Lol I was talking about the shiny silver Audi in the picture below the text, not some random truck. :joy:

That’s true, I guess the Gibson plaza is a major step forward here. I guess I’m mainly unsure if attendees will realize that all of those things are there (and that they’re worth checking out).

Plus, if you’re jetlagged and new to America, it’ll take a pretty big leap of faith to go from Fayetteville St. to Glenwood South or the Warehouse District - or from South St. to Dix Park, in which case, this is what you’d see when it’s not raining or nighttime:

Plus, the speed that cars drive down McDowell, Dawson, and Western Blvd. are literally highway speeds in some countries.

Let me rephrase the question, then: what’s a good way to make first-time visitors feel like there’s enough to do in downtown Raleigh? How would y’all make the case that attendees should go to Raleigh in person (as opposed to attending virtually from their home countries) even though foreigners are getting way of going to America, in the first place?

My second “big draw” I’d mention is the new dino exhibit at the NC Science Museum. It’s continuously evolving as they work to excavate the fossils, and it’s amazing to see in person. I mean… it’s a damn T-REX and TRICERATOPS skeleton, two of the most iconic creatures to ever walk the Earth. And you can spend a good amount of time at the museum; there’s a ticketed whale exhibit going on now.

One thing I’d really love to see in the future is an NC Art Museum annex in downtown - just a smaller gallery that the NCMA can have full control over… specifically HERE would be perfect:

maybe tie the visit in with a symphonic performance?

That is the old museum correct? Gosh, it was there sooo long ago, I hardly remember going.

Maybe include some information about the R-line bus option in order move about downtown Raleigh beyond Fayetteville Street.

Would allow easy exploration of the science museum, Glenwood South, and the Warehouse District without long walks through unfamiliar environs.

I think that if you ask a 1000 people what color(s) is Raleigh’s brand, I think that red floats to the top. It’s the dominant color in our existing and proposed flag. It’s the dominant color of our anchor university. It’s the color of the Carolina Hurricanes.
While I don’t advocate for a singular color palette for our city, I don’t think that seafoam green or light blues, etc. align with our city’s brand.

To the seafoam green I must agree. Maybe the blue fits better…but I get your point. It is well taken.

obligatory post about the building at the center of our city and its most unique feature: oxidized copper, a beautiful shade of blue-green some might even compare with seafoam.

the “carolina copperhead.” literally and figuratively. one of only a handful of copper capitol cupolas in the united states, a great alliteration and also in my opinion far and away the best mascot should an mlb team ever decide to choose this city.

To seafoam :seafoam_green: or to NOT seafoam :seafoam_green: If I can’t see it from the street level then I don’t care. It is when it is in my face, that I prefer to have it as pillow decor. Just saying.

Well off topic at this point but relating to city colors, just looking at that picture, I’d love to see a palette that reflects the changing leaves of the oak trees… Deep green, gold, and maroon. Come to think of it the original city flag does.

I had NEVER noticed it until a few weeks ago, but YES! That says “Museum of Art” engraved into the stone above the door. Currently just boring office space… would love to see it returned to its former purpose as either an NCMA Auxiliary space, or hell - even a “Raleigh Institute of the Arts” city-owned art museum.

NCMA has its hands full with improving the existing facility and SECCA (now “NCMA West”) in Winston-Salem. As for the City, they’ve basically let the Contemporary Art Museum flounder and I don’t believe there is any appetite on the City Council for the City to run its own museum, aside from the arts centers and the exhibit space at City hall.

Oh don’t I know it- but one can dream. For Raleigh’s past insistence on becoming an “arts capital of the South” - our city gov’t sure doesn’t put their money where their mouths are lol

All of the lights were back on, so at least they are paying attention if they aren’t coming on for some reason.

I think the best permanent adaptation of Fayetteville St. should include an extension of the existing green infrastructure.

What do I mean by this?:

  1. Along with extending the existing tree areas towards buildings, the city should also install rain gardens in most of the parking spaces.

This would make the street more narrow and decrease vehicle speeds, increase the stormwater resilience of the street, and create a more square-like open space environment.

  1. DRA could reorganize the way rodeos and other events are done, with a focus of pedestrian traffic onto sidewalks (as @dtraleigh has suggested before). The food trucks or vendors could fill the street in one or two single file lines, as the crowd fills the sidewalks.
