I like that rollercoaster ride I see midway up the building. The downward of that ride looks amazing.

I’m concerned that it doesn’t appear to be anchored to the ground, just the roof of the Marriott, the light post, and the Hopscotch stage…

You can all make fun of my art skills all you want, but this is who you’re making fun of just FYI:

A not too exciting update on Fayetteville Street but there are some good comments here and you can get an idea of the direction they want to go first. This will probably include some of the sidewalk changes I mentioned here. I think it makes sense to do it on the 100 and 200 block and phase it in on the rest of the street.

Great street activation ideas from Bill King (DRA President) and Pam Blondin (Deco) as well as council members on this committee but I’m afraid that all that creative brainstorming was lost on the city staff but we’ll see what comes back in future updates. I hope to be proven wrong.

I think that it’s in the best interest of the city to come up with a simple strategic platform for the street, and then allow flexibility in how it’s curated based on public and business needs. Clearly they are already proposing flexibility for the outdoor dining part, but it may be interesting to see how the public realm can play out with some experimentation over time.

One of the negatives of pushing the outdoor dining against the building is that it doesn’t allow a business to have outdoor space that’s wider than their own space. If it’s across the walkway, then a restaurant can expand wider without interfering with an adjacent business that doesn’t require the outdoor space.

Also, do we know if the city collects a fee from the businesses for use of the public realm?

I know some have discussed in the past that events down Fayetteville should orient the tents facing the sidewalks. I still think that would be interesting to try, but I do feel like the lights on the trees have helped a lot with the sidewalk feel during events. They extend the setting a lot more at night when the sidewalk is more illuminated.

gonna be what, about 10 floors taller than the Marriott? I agree with the other post that it’s a bit exaggerated here, but the way it will sit perpendicular to the Marriott will pretty much completely or mostly block it and the bank across from Marriott from the South Saunders Money shot, unfortunately.

Pretty street, even a lot of people inside well established restaurants, but very quiet on the street itself on this cold fall night.

Still, did our first sip and stroll, with a Belgian beer from Raleigh Times around Fayetteville St and over to the new ABC and Deco.

The offerings of the Italian market in city plaza, which seemed to basically be takeout pizza.
