First Citizens Bank in downtown Raleigh

The PNC building replaced (physically) the 12 story one.

Nope, look at the tall building in this pic- this was on the current First Citizen’s lot!

PNC replaced a 20 story building I believe. I actually saw it demolished by implosion the first year I moved here.

Ok. Had them confused. The 20 story bldg was first citizens - where pnc is now. Not sure the history on the 12 story one.

You can see Lainer-Womble on one sign, don’t know Lainer, but Womble was a big name around town when I moved there. You can also see what I think is Nowell’s in the bottom right - there went to Cameron Vil, and then to Crabtree - are they still around?

Still lickin’…They took their ‘upscale’ to the Old Wake Forest Rd area with Kanki / Red Lobster…

The old FCB building had a lot of terra cotta detail work on the exterior and some interiors. I heard that some of it was removed before the implosion. Does anyone know if any of the work has surfaced in Raleigh? Watching that building go down was so sad.

By the way, I love that people always bring this up any time someone whispers “first citizens” that I almost hate that I’m too young to have seen this. Or maybe I was spared the pain? It must have been a beauty of a building.

It was a gem. I only got the courage up once, as a teen, to walk through the banking hall. It was classic, a long and high marble counter with the tellers behind, fluted columns supporting the ceiling, like a small movie set. So much different the Wachovia’s bright and ultra-mod room.

Yes, I still grieve the loss of that grand building. First Citizens had a plan for a landmark tall building on the site of current PNC Plaza. The lot sat empty for years, as North Hills and Gorman Street beckoned. FCB finally sold and the RBC/PNC was built. Our hometown very large bank had the grey windowless low rise building, as its downtown placeholder. At least now, we have windows! BB&T/Truist it is NOT.

Emporis says the two demolished were:

Security National Bank, 12 stories, completed 1914, demolished 1961

Commercial National Bank, 11 stories, completed 1913, demolished 1991

No 20 story building has ever been demolished in Raleigh.

Thanks for this. I think there would be very specific documentation if Raleigh ever imploded a 20 story building. I certainly don’t remember that happening in Raleigh!

FCB apparently still on track to merge with CIT Group, creating the 19th largest US Bank by mid-21

Over $100Billion in assets. Still dwarfed by JP Morgan, Wells Fargo & Citi but a pretty sizable bank all the same.

Merger has not closed. My banker told me the merger has not closed but is still in the due diligence & regulatory process.

TBJ has article stating such.

You are correct. Not merged. Waiting regulatory approval.

Especially for a bank that was under $25B just a few years ago.

For the amount of gutting they’re doing to this building you would figure they should just chuck it and build something taller than five stories on Fayetteville St., but I’m no commercial real estate expert. image|375x500

It would be fun to see them add a 10 story brick & terra cotta classic tower on top of thismodern base, the inverse of what is often built, classic base and modern tower.
