Seems like traffic and safety are the primary concerns. However, from the article:
“Chuck Walker is representing the landowners. He said they’ve done two traffic studies that show the development would actually reduce the number of car trips during peak morning and evening times.”
Also mentioned is the concern of more cars parking on the streets and the developers don’t want to add more parking, I think.
The article seems a bit disjointed. The hearing last night may have provided more concise information.
that the park is being used as a convenient tool to just be NIMBYs. These folks certainly don’t seem to be concerned about all of the cars that they drive in their neighborhood. Also, look at that park’s own rules. Second on that list is “Adult supervision is required”. Sheesh. Be responsible for your kids people.
Also, the irony isn’t lost on me that they showcase the toy parking lot that these tots use. They are literally teaching the next generation to learn car dependency.
I get all these emails from the neighborhood “representatives” organizing their opposition. In a nutshell:
Too many condo units
Too tall
Needs more parking
But too much traffic
Add retail along Bickett
Some nebulous safety concern about the park??
There isn’t a solution that solves all their complaints because some of them are in direct conflict with each other (more parking but not more height?) (more retail spaces would take away parking spaces) (more retail would cause more traffic) etc… I wonder if they are doing this on purpose.
I agree, but the site is too narrow to fit that AND enough parking on that level. The developer has said the only way to accommodate that is another level and he knew that would be even less favorable to the neighborhood.
If they are so concerned about traffic next to the park, make those two streets on either side of the park dead ends, so that only local residents and park patrons use those streets. But they will probably bitch about that too, because it would be inconvenient.
Funny thing is that they all involve safety but drive these big SUVs like Tahoe or Yukon where you literally cannot see a kid in front of you while seated in front seats.
Mac’s is good and could do well. It’s really just a barbecue themed sports bar with some motorcycle paraphernalia. They just need to gut the space and start over because it’s so poorly configured
Article says the landlord owns the kitchen equipment. Once it is removed, Macs team will go in and do what they need to do. Hopefully that is a gutting and refurb.
There are 2 brick ovens so they’ll be serving up flatbreads and calzones as well. Their menu looks tasty. Hope they do what others couldn’t and find success here.
I was talking about Lonerider the other day. I went to this location a few times and I think it was really poor management. I’ve been there a few times. Had food when they had the kitchen open. They ended up closing it for some reason. It seemed to be busy when we would go there. I also went in last winter and it was soo cold inside. With the cold and no food we never wanted to go back
Edit* Just saw @OakFolk mention the landlord. Maybe Lonerider was looking to get out if the landlord wasn’t keeping up with the building.
Hmmmm, a whiff of elitism. This is Raleigh, North Cackalacky. Home of North Carolina College of Mechanic Arts. This chain is well run and has also been in Greensboro for about a decade.
Yankees have made this area better I do agree. I actually do not really like most southern food. My complaint is that the northern section of Glenwood Ave at Five Poons is no Park Avenue.
I pass by the Mac’s in Wilmington whenever I’m down there and it’s always busy even on a stroad outside of the downtown area, I think it’ll do well in Five Points.
