we’re doing sam jones slander now? hate their “cornbread” that much?
I don’t know! It’s definitely, frustratingly slow progress- but it’s looking 100% better than it did when this all started! Just the landscaping alone is giving it a more finished look. I’m curious when all the interior spaces will finally start opening up because that “Opening summer 2025” sign does look silly now hahaha - perhaps by summer 2026 this whole project will look and feel more complete with more of these spaces being filled with new businesses opening to the public! At least the TRC and Cannonball Music hall have been open and active. Just hope Cannonball specifically has been financially successful despite having little to no activity around it. So long as they can hold on another year, they’ll have tons more foot traffic activity from the surrounding spots when they all open. Plus now we have the 20-story redevelopment of the ABC warehouse right next door to look forward to!
which will connect to…
haha but nah, it’s a good first step… hopefully of many
Is this on the east side of Atlantic? I didn’t realize there was going to be a multi-use path. I’m assuming this is by the developer? Hopefully this gets the City motivated to start on the sidewalk to connect to the greenway.
@wey Oops, meant to reply to your post,
If you build it, they will…connect it…?
i sincerely hope so, it’s literally one block
bumping this because it’s lived rent free in my head since i posted it. what in the world would it take to ever get the city and the state interested in this? it feels like a really valuable connection for pedestrians.
There’s a set of high voltage lines running alongside the train tracks that you also have to deal with. Plus Capital and plus private property at Salvation Army. Tall order.
From a Streetview tour of the immediate area I agree with @mmodlin that a pedestrian bridge is unlikely.
The more obtainable bike/pedestrian access from the Crabtree Blvd. intersection with Capital Blvd. would be the improvement of the apparently abandoned R/W corridor to the south of the intersection now owned by RIW 2 LP (the same listed owner of Ironworks).
How it looks now compared with 9 years ago:
Access from the intersection to the corridor could be via the existing sidewalk on the west side of Capital improved to a multipath cross-section.
Very doable with little expense.
i’ve biked up this secret path many times and RIW recently blocked off access with tall fencing and barricades. i really hope they’re taking this connection into consideration.
Another 20-story rezoning request for this area: 2233 Capital Blvd
The potential in this area continues to be recognized and expanded. If this and the ABC lot are both approved, 95%+ of the area outlined below would be zoned for 20 stories
are there parking regs involved? and can the streets handle it?
Sidewalks, a more connected street network, and transit connections would suffice
I’m sure this has been a topic in this or other threads but there is just really so much potential to interconnect the neighborhoods west (greater five points, RIW) and east of capital (Lions Park, Mordecai, Oakwood) with well thought out non-car infrastructure, especially that gets across capital blvd.
A world where you have these things would be transformative
- better sidewalks bike lanes between RIW and Five Points/Whitaker Mill
- better sidewalks/greenway connections between Gateway Plaza/Lions Park and RIW
- The greenway expansion and Smokey Hollow Park
- Some sort of pedestrian/bike bridge, potentially from Carson St, connecting the backside of Mordecai
- Infill development with pedestrian improvements on the west side of Capital Blvd (between Pershing and Captial Blvd)
- Complete development of RIW and Salvage Yard properties
- Complete development of mid-town vision with water front development
One can dream, and what a dream that is!
I think the amount of density already coming online, much less what’s possible, in this area would surprise people. Substantial town home developments already all along this part of Five Points. There are rumors of up to 40 more townhomes going on Sunrise alone in the next year or so, plus the planned redevelopment of the retail complex on Bickett
You could imagine some large multi-family developments as well along Capital.
First I’m hearing about this redevelopment on Bickett. I’m assuming you’re talking about Z-50-21? Is there a timeline for any of that?
